Strike: Mimiko Joins in Refuse Clearing

James Sowole in Akure

As the strike embarked upon by the civil servants in Ondo State bites harder, the State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, on Thursday led some members of his cabinet to the popular Adesida/Oyemekun Road where he engaged in packing of refuse.

The action of the governor came as striking workers embarked on protests round some streets and establishments in the state capital.

Sequel to the strike, which has entered the second week, major roads and streets in the state capital are littered with refuse as workers of the Waste Management Authority also joined in the strike over non-payment of five months’ salaries.

The governor, who handled a shovel himself to demonstrate his hatred for the filthy condition of the city due to the strike, called on street sweepers to go back to their duty posts because many of them are casual workers, who do not belong to any union.

The governor specifically said he was not happy with the dirty condition of the city which had been adjudged as one of the cleanest state capitals.

As the governor was coming back to the Government House, the striking workers blocked the main gate to the state Government House, thus preventing him from entering.
