By Zacheaus Somorin

In response to the humanitarian needs in the Lake Chad Basin region, including those related to the growing insecurity caused by regional terrorism, Canada is providing more than 26 million Canadian dollars in humanitarian assistance in 2016.

This support will help to provide food, drinking water, hygiene, sanitation and health services, treatment for acute malnutrition and support for livelihoods for vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons and communities hosting refugees.

Canada’s partners in this respect include the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), CARE, l’OEuvre Léger, Oxfam Québec, Development and Peace, Action Against Hunger and the Norwegian Refugee Council.
