Scores Homeless in Ibadan as Downpour Wreaks Havoc

Scores of residents of Ibadan Wednesday night wept uncontrollably following a heavy downpour that sacked them from their homes.

Areas mostly affected were the less cities in Ido local government area.

Community leaders were seen early Thursday morning at Lade area of Omi Adio making distress calls to contact officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to halt all movement of trains to the area to avert another tragedy that may arise from train accident.

Among the areas that were affected are Odo-Ona , Gbekuba, NIHORT ,Oke-Ayo, and some parts of Apata but the worst hit was Omi-Adio where many residents were sacked by the flood.

A private school with boarding facilities situated at Gbekuba area of the city was flooded, while many students of the school were trapped in the flood.

Sources said that some of the students rescued in the flood last Wednesday night were presently receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital.

The Public Relations Officer, University College Hospital (UCH), Mr Deji Bobade, said the hospital has been placed on alert but that they had not received any flood-related case in the hospital.

The popular Omi Adio market was levelled with water, along with offices and shops .

About 200 shops were estimated to have been destroyed by the flood which defied all the water channels and drainages by local authorities to control flood.
