Unpaid Salaries; Organised Labour Orders Indefinite Strike In Ondo

James Sowole in Akure

Organised labour in Ondo State on Tuesday directed workers in the employment of the State Government to embark on an indefinite strike from Wednesday.

The directive to commence the strike was contained in a communique issued at the end of the emergency meeting of the leadership of the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) held this Tuesday in Akure, the state capital.

Labour said the strike become inevitable because the Ondo State Government is owing workers five months’ salaries.

The communiqué signed by the leadership of the labour unions stated that non-payment of salaries between January and may had negatively affected workers and pensioners economically, socially, psychologically and health-wise, which the labour unions can no longer bear.

The organised labour expressed dismay that the state government failed to honour an agreement it earlier reached with them on the payment of two out of the five months by May 31.

The communique stated: “That it has become unbearable that workers have not received salaries for the past five months at a stretch.

“That workers of Ondo State can no longer bear this situation in view of the untold hardship suffered by these workers”.
