Lagos State University (LASU) on Thursday installed Justice Adesola George Oguntade (rtd), as the fourth Chancellor of the institution.
Oguntade who was installed by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, would in the next five years steer the ceremonial ship of the institution.
Speaking at the 20th convocation ceremony for the conferment of higher degrees, Governor Ambode congratulated the retired jurist in his accomplishment and wished him success.
He said he saw the need to focus on LASU to bring its unending crises to a halt, adding, “today good reasoning has prevailed over the crisis. “
He disclosed that the students would soon begin to live on campus to guide against vices, adding that his administration will place priority on graduates of the institution for work placement with its ‘Ready Set Work’ initiative.
Ambode thanked the governing council for its vision saying, “our vision is to have an institution that will be job creators rather than job seekers. The mission of the state government is to make LASU first in research and innovations.”
In his response, Justice Oguntade thanked the governor for seeing him worthy to serve the institution, while calling for a lasting peace in the institution.
According to him, “We have a tomorrow to plan for , how will our tomorrow be? LASU has been enjoying the goodwill of past governors till date but what then do we lack!
“One thing that it lacks is peace, peace and peace. Once we maintain it, we will get there.”
To achieve a lasting peace, he said there is need to embrace it and pay the price by saying goodbye to crisis.
“We need to sheath the sword and embrace peace. We must let our actions and utterances have a common goal. Always remember that our actions speak louder than words,” Oguntade stressed.
He expressed concern that much time, resources, talent and precious lives had been lost in trying to achieve peace, saying that they would all seek, promote and possess peace for greater benefit.
“The fulcrum for peace is rule of law and justice,” he said.
