Panel on Oil Spill, Pollution Commences Sitting in Uyo

No fewer than 45 cases bothering on oil spills, pollution and environmental degradation have been received by the Special Investigation Panel on Oil Spills and Pollution in Nigeria, the Chairperson of the panel, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, has disclosed.

Ovrawah who disclosed this on Monday at a public hearing of the special investigation panel held at the Federal High Complex Uyo , also made known that 18 cases have been shortlisted for hearing during the one week sitting of members of the panel in
Akwa Ibom State.

She said the panel could not sit after the inauguration because the delay in passing the 2016 federal government budget and the threat of strike by organized labour.

According to her, the panel, set up by the National Human Rights Commission, was a fact finding one to hear complaints as petitioned from communities and organisations in the Niger Delta region.
