Niger Delta ex-militants on Monday kicked against plans by some unnamed politicians to sabotage the federal government’ s amnesty programme, warning that any such plan would not be in the interest of the oil-rich region.
Specifically, the former warlords drawn from the nine States of the Niger Delta warned against the purported call for the sack of the Chairman of the Implementation Committee, Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh, describing it as a distraction.
They maintained that the pushing for the amnesty chief’s removal would derail the programme and escalate the current tension in the region.
In a statement by the ex-militant leaders, under the aegis of the Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiatives, (LPCDI), led by Reuben Wilson, popularly called Pastor Reuben, the group urged politicians to assist the committee to secure more funding for increased performance.
“The Federal Government’s amnesty proclamation for the ex-freedom fighters by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was a step in the right direction for the total infrastructural and human capacity development of the Niger Delta Region.
‘’While we earnestly await the total implementation of the amnesty package and finding lasting solutions to some grey areas, the youths and elders should work with the Office of the Special Adviser to Mr. President for the betterment of all’’, the ex-agitators advised.
The group urged Nigerians to insist on the implementation and full compliance by the Federal Government to the programme.
