GE Boosts Girls’ Interest in Science and Tech

General Electric says it is committed to stimulating the interest of girls in secondary schools in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). To this end, two of GE’s diversity groups – the Women’s network and the Africa Affinity Forum on Thursday, held this year’s edition of the Girls’ In Technology Day. The annual event started four years ago in collaboration with Women’s Technology Empowerment Center (W.TEC), a Non-Governmental Organization.

This year’s event which took place at the Victoria Island, Lagos office of GE will see Secondary School girls aged between 13-17years in various activities including Animation Programming with Alice, developing new Apps using AppInventor2, and creating a documentary on ‘Girls day in GE.

The Girl’s in Technology Day had participation from top GE Executives including, Jim Fowler – VP & Chief Information Officer [CIO] – GE Digital; Anthony Thomas – Senior Executive & CIO – GE Digital; Abu Suleiman – Sub Saharan Africa Regional CIO – GE Digital; Vera Ambeva – Senior Business Solutions Leader and Kristof Okonkwo – West Africa IT Ops leader.

GE, is committed to empower young ladies eliminate stereotypes that careers in the sciences are not meant for women. The Girls in Technology day is therefore, an initiative aimed at developing the interest, retention and promotion of the inclusion of the females in Science and Technology.
The organisation is committed to this annual event which showcases the application of technology in real life. W.TEC which is GE’s partner on this project follows up on the progress of participants and documents success stories as more girls get involved in STEM.
