Strike Takes Off on Shaky Note in Imo

Amby Uneze in Owerri

The strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) took off on a shaky note in Imo state as workers arrived at their places of work in the morning with the hope of carrying out their official duties but were chased out by officials of the NLC.

While state workers, including civil servants and teachers of public schools, were asked to go back to their various homes, their federal counterparts were not affected as the state federal secretariat situated along Port Harcourt road was busy with activities going on.

Banks were not left out as most of those visited were attending to their customers, even as information filtered in later that the staff of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) and that of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede were asked to join their counterparts to observe the strike action.

Addressing the workers at the front gate of the State Secretariat, Port Harcourt road, Owerri, the state Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Austin Chilakpu said that they in compliance with the national directive which urged them to join the strike immediately. He lamented the attitude of government over the plight of Nigerians which he described as “insensitive”, and urged all workers to heed the directive of the NLC with immediate effect.
