Strike in Edo Records Partial Success

By Adibe Emenyonu

The strike called by the organised labour in Edo state was skeletally observed. While a handful of workers stayed at home in obedience to NLC’s order, most of them failed to observe the strike and reported for duty.

For instance, at the state secretariat, along Sapele road, Comrade Emmanuel Ademokun in conjunction with civil society groups chased away workers who reported for duty on Wednesday.

But efforts to display the same bravado failed at state High Court as they were rebuffed by staff.

A Court Registrar said they decided to turn up for duty because they were scared based on past experiences with the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole who refused to pay them when they embarked on strike.

According to him, “We are waiting  for labour officials to come and drive us out of the court. That is when we will now know that the strike is going on. If not, we will always come to work because we don’t want any of our salaries not to be paid”, he said.

Similarly at the federal secretariat, workers were seen at their duty posts. Ditto at the banks except Access Bank branches in the state.

The education sector was also divided in observing the strike as some schools opened, while some were closed.
