No Strike in Rivers

Ernest Chinwo in Port Harcourt

Workers in Rivers State shunned the call by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to proceed on strike in protest against the removal of petroleum subsidy and increase in electricity tariff.

When THISDAY visited the secretariat of the state civil service, workers were found going about their normal duties. Schools, both public and private, were also in session, with teachers attending to their pupils.

At the Federal Secretariat, Port Harcourt, all offices were open and workers were seen at their duty posts. There was nothing to suggest or indicate that there was any strike.

Banks and other commercial offices in Port Harcourt were open for business while workers went about their duties without molestation.

Factional chairman of the NLC, Ada Williams, said his faction was not on strike.
