Laleye Dipo in Minna
The strike called by Labour in the country to press home their demand for the reversal of the new pump price of petroleum received cold reception in Minna, the Niger state capital, which is the hub of the civil service.
The state secretariat was open with majority of civil servants seen at their duty posts though not much work was going on as the workers were seen in groups discussing the issue of the strike.
The local government secretariat was also open to its workers who came out for the day’s job.
Medical doctors, nurses and other medical staff were also seen at the various health institutions performing their duties while other categories of workers on essential duties, including water board staff, also reported for work.
Other segments of the society especially commercial motor drivers and artisans were also seen going about their normal duties.
Officials of state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, were seen moving from one place to the order to see the compliance with its directives and in all the places visited workers ignored the officials.
Comrade Yahaya Ndako, when contacted, expressed disappointment that workers and members of the public have failed to join the strike.
Ndako told ThisDay that the public ‘think it is a national strike so they are not concerned’.
‘It is sad that some people have ‘religionise’ and regionalize the strike they think that we are fighting Buhari’.
