Public service activities were on Wednesday paralysed in Ondo State following the nationwide strike ordered by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to protest the Federal Government’s increase of the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol from N86.50 to N145 per litre.
Though workers were not mobilized to protest on the streets, labour leaders gathered at strategic locations in Akure, the state capital, to enforce compliance with the strike order.
Commercial banks that opened for business early in the morning, equally closed shops about 9:30am when the news filtered in that members of the National Union of Banks Insurance and other Financial Institutions (NUBIFIE) should comply with the strike order.
At the various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), there were no workers on ground except those that were regarded as management staff, who came to their offices but without being allowed to bring in their cars.
The strike became more effective when the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) received a directive from the national secretariat that members should join the strike.
