Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Sunday blamed all acts of terrorism, insurgency and other vices currently rocking the country on dysfunctional family values and value system.
He made the remark at the 23rd International Family Day held at Lagos House, Ikeja, where he said the family “remains the bedrock of every society and must not be allowed to disintegrate.”
The governor marked the international family day alongside his wife, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, the state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Oluranti Adebule, the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Sarah Sosan and All progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader in South-West, Mrs. Kemi Nelson among others.
Speaking at the event, Ambode said the cities of the world “are affected by the children being raised presently. A lot of the act of terror and violence that have ruptured global peace and security today are due to absence of strong families ties.
“Also, most cases of domestic violence recorded in the country today were due to dysfunctional family background. Our traditional families are born and due to daily challenges of making earns meet.
“Since we are all born into different families, our families have influenced and shaped our lives. Some of the important moment of our lives have taken place within our families.
“It is for this reason that the United Nation placed a lot of emphasis on the family, as an important factor in human relation, thereby setting aside this day to celebrate the values of family across ethnic, social, religious and economic divides.”
He provided some ways out of the problems that dysfunctional family relations had created, noting that the present generation should as a matter of urgency, find time “to reconnect with our families.
“Our children, wife and others need us. The family member always provide emotional support in the time of need. We are all family members in need of emotional, moral and physical support.”
He noted that the support and encouragement given to family member today would help prevent violence and terror in the society tomorrow, noting that the state government would continue “to provide the needed infrastructure and institutional support for the family.”
