Stakeholders have called for the need for donor agencies and development partners in the water sector to put their money in the same basket to enhance the channelling of the funds uniformly.

This call was made on Thursday in Abuja at the 2016 WaterAid policy dialogue on Achieving Sustainable Development Goal Six – integrating wash in wider development – to mark the 20th anniversary of WaterAid Nigeria

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Water Resources, Engr, Suleiman Adamu, said relying solely on government to fund the sector will not help achieve SDGs’ objectives, saying the challenge of sector coordination at federal and state levels is an urgent one.

He however assured that government will take a leadership role in setting the WASH agenda in Nigeria.
He said though there are many fragmented programmes on water in the country, the ministry of water is championing a national programme on WASH others can key in to.

He challenged the private sector and commercial brands to build and brand WASH facilities in communities as is being done in airports and other public places.

He said there are 21 different donor agencies and development partners in the water sector working on different problems but that it will be better if they would all combine their efforts towards solving a particular problem at a particular time.
