Yet Another Kano Fire Razes Kurmi Market

By Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano

Fire has destroyed millions of naira worth of property at  Kurmi market in Kano metropolis, the second or third time in six months that this very market is being gutted by fire.

The State director of fire service,  Alhaji Mustapha Rilwan, said his office got distress calls around 10 o’clock on Tuesday night but they were able to put out the inferno around 1am.

“We were lucky to have quenched the inferno within a short time of our arrival at the scene of the incident,” he said.

“We are still trying to know the actual number of shops affected as the incident happened in the night”.

He said the cause of the fire was still not known but advised people to take appropriate measures to avoid fire outbreaks.

An eye-witness who spoke under anonymity said the fire razed no fewer than 30 shops in the market.

He said fire fighters’ quick arrival had prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the market.
