Participants at a human rights training workshop for instructors in police training institutions in the north have called for improved funding and provision of adequate and effective working tools and logistics for the Nigerian police.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the four-day capacity building workshop on human rights, organised by Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), the communique stressed the need for the frequent training and retraining of police men and all other agencies involved in the administration of justice and maintenance of law and order on human rights and related issues.
The document, which was jointly signed by the executive director of PRAWA, Dr. Uju Ugomoh, and the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Department of Training and Development, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Mr. Ambrose Sunny Onah, also cautioned police officers against compromising their integrity and that of the police force.
“Police officers shall not compromise their integrity nor that of the force by accepting, giving or soliciting any gratuity which could be interpreted as capable of influencing their official acts or judgments and shall treat all members of the public courteously and with respect” the communique said.
