Gender Bill: Nigerian Women Have Right to Address Their Issues Through Legislation – Bisi Fayemi

By Adedayo Akinwale

The ripples generated by the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill rejected by the National Assembly are far from over as the former First Lady of Ekiti State, and the wife of the Minister of Solid Minerals, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, has said that Nigerian women have the right to address their issues through legislation.

She said she was not actually surprised that the bill was thrown out by the Senate during the second reading due to the way issues concerning women in the country have so far been treated.

Fayemi however maintained that if truly the country wants  to develop and build an inclusive society, then the demands of women cannot continue to be ignored.

She stated these at the weekend in Abuja during the 7th annual leadership lecture and graduation ceremony of the Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development Study (Cebtre LSD).

According to her, “We can’t continue to have a country where women and girls are not save, and continue to be violated everyday. Now, mothers are even afraid to send their daughters to school because of the fear that they are going to be abused. We cannot continue this way, all of us should be concerned.”
