No fewer than 70 orphans have been empowered by a non-governmental organization (NGO), Life Savers Initiative (LSI), in Sokoto State.
The state Coodinator of Life Savers Initiative, Hadiza Ibrahim Yero, disclosed this yesterday during a chat with journalists in Sokoto.
She said the orphans were living in deprivation and squalor having lost their parents without any tangible support from relatives.
Yero stated that the organisation was collaborating with Zafafi laboratory, Chidox, Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee and other donors to provide support to the orphans.
According to her, through collaboration with donor agencies, LSI was able to provide food items and financial support to the orphans.
She explained that most of the orphans were enrolled in school by the organisation to enable them have a bright future.
“We enrolled these orphans in primary and secondary schools. In fact, we even have a girl studying in the university at the moment through our support,” she said.
She stated that LSI established a skill acquisition centre in Dangeshuni Local Government Area to train women on vocational skills in order to enable them become self reliant through support from the United States Agency for International Development Development (USAID).
She admitted that the organisation has limited resources to support more orphans, saying this had hampered their activities.
The coordinator therefore, appealed to wealthy individuals in the state to assist orphans in order to receive abundant reward from God.
