The civil rights group, Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER), has accused Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) of wrongfully accusing the army of committing genocide during the last weekend re-run election in Rivers state.

The Executive Director of the group, Mr. Frank Tietie, stated this at a press conference on Monday in Abuja, clarifying the claims and counter-claims over the political killings in the state as well as what he described as the “misleading CLO reports.”

According to Tietie, genocide is a systematic attempt or effort by any group of people or institution to wipe out any ethnic group.

“That is what the CLO now accused our Nigerian Army of, yet the Attorney General of the Federation keeps quiet; everybody is quiet. If we have an army that becomes so intimidated by loud lying voices, the army would soon become very restricted.

“If the army does not go to the extent of protecting the citizens particularly during elections in … flash points like Rivers state, what will happen to citizens’ fundamental human rights to life?” he queried.
