Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF) has endorsed Gossy natural spring water for its quality contribution towards good health and nutrition to consumers over the years.
Gossy is manufactured by Warm Spring Water Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of UAC of Nigeria Plc.
The endorsement was made in Lagos during the official launch of Nigerian Heart Foundation Heart Check Food Labeling.
The Vice-Chairman, NHF, Dr. Femi Mobolaji-Lawal, in his address said that Gossy got endorsement because of its importance to healthy living.
“What people eat can make a real difference in helping to reduce non-communicable disease (NCDs) including heart diseases, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which are the leading killer diseases globally. As part of the global strategy to reducing NCDs in Nigeria, NHF established the Heart Check Food Labelling Programme in 1998,” he said.
He explained that in fulfillment of its commitment to promoting healthy living and ensure Nigerians are given heart healthy options, NHF works closely with National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), State Ministry of Health, food manufacturing industries and other non-governmental organisations in the food and beverage industry on this programme.
Mobolaji-Lawal further pointed out the growing number of unhealthy heart food products in the Nigerian market is alarming.
He disclosed that NCDs are estimated to account for not less than 24 per cent of the total deaths in Nigeria.
“The growing prevalence of heart disease has called for more awareness for anybody who wishes to purchase any water product from the markets need to look at the product label.”
He, however, noted that NHF and NAFDAC, through its collaboration on the programme are better positioned to tackle the threat of heart disease by educating the population on the need to make informed choices.
“NHF is encouraged that more food manufacturing companies are enrolling in this laudable programme especially manufacturers of Vegetable oil, Milk and Water, ” he said.
He congratulated the management of Warm Spring Waters Nigeria Limited for taking the bold step and becoming the first water manufacturing company that focuses on the health of the Nigerian population through its collaboration with the NHF on the NHF Check Food Labelling programme initiative.
“The launch of Gossy Natural Spring Water today is a land – mark in the history of healthy food products in Nigeria. We call on other food beverage manufacturers to avail themselves of this great opportunity, ” he said.
Mobolaji-Lawal used the occasion to call on Nigerian consumers who are conscious of their well-being to eat and drink heart friendly food products, because that can make a real difference in helping to lower total blood cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), Sodium and blood glucose.
