Former Director – General, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) Otunba Segun Runsewe has made a clarion call on tourism practitioners in to track the activities of Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN) and holding its leadership accountable.
Runsewe who was speaking on the sidelines of the recent National Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) recognition award and AGM in Calabar, lamented the lack of advocacy in the sector particularly at this time when Nigeria needs help to diversify its economy.
His comment on the tourism industry was the first time he would air an opinion since he was removed from office two years ago. The former NTDC boss expressed sadness at the poor attention to tourism and wondered why some stakeholders could not challenge and correct the ugly situation.
Runsewe who was a recipient of NATOP award for contribution to the tourism industry during his tenure, noted that time has come to rebrand the industry, while reminding everyone that tourism is the highest employer of labour in the world.
He however commended NATOP for showing robust capacity in analysing tourism issues and also for choosing to confer an award on him for his modest contribution to growth of Nigerian tourism.
In a letter to the president of NATOP, Runsewe who is now the chairman Golf Garden Waterfront, an upscale golf sports tourism resort in Abuja stated that NATOP has always played vital roles in setting the tourism agenda in Nigeria.
