The Kwara state Fire service has said that a total of 155 fire incidents were recorded between January and December 2015 in various parts of the state.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, the head of the department of Fire Prevention, state Fire Service, Alhaji AbdulWaheed Yakub, said the number recorded which was higher than those of previous years occurred in filling stations, residential areas, markets and public places across the three senatorial said of the state.
Yakub who said that 34 fire incidents occurred in January, 2015, added that12 cases were recorded in February, while he said that March had 22, adding that 17 outbreaks were recorded in April.
He also said that 17 cases were recorded in May, eight in June, July 6, August 8 while September had the lowest figure of four.
The rest months according to him were October and November which recorded nine cases each while December had 18.
He said the state Fire service could not ascertain the cause of the fire incidents, while he attributed remote causes to negligence.
Yakub said the state Fire Service was fully prepare to record less number of fire cases in 2016
He said the state government had provided modern equipment and manpower that could put out fire incident that might occur in any part of the state.
He said the state fire service was currently embarking on sensitisation programme with production of handbills in various languages to prevent fire outbreaks.
Yakub advised residents of the state to always be fire concious by avoiding acts that can cause fire disaster.
“Residents should not allow children to play with matches, if there is a bush near your residence, clear it some metres away to prevent bush burning”, Yakub warned.
The HOD advised residents to desist from keeping petrol in the house and avoid the use of gas if possible.
