The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh has defended the 1.6 per cent budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector in the 2016 appropriation bill currently before the National Assembly.
Ogbe, who admitted that the budget was far below the requisite need of the ministry, noted that the All Progressives Congress ( APC) administration was more concerned about improving essential infrastructure throughout the federation, which he said necessitated the huge bugetary allocation to the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.
“The 1.6 per cent budget is on the lean side, but government wants to deal with infrastructure as quickly as possible. Government will take another look at the agricultural sector in the coming budgets,” he said.
Ogbe however noted that the ministry under his watch will ensure prudent use of funds to ensure maximum delivery with limited resources. “We will go as far as we can with the budget we have,” he added.
