Locking Horns: The Elliot-Gbajabiamila Controversy

For years, the relationship between Femi Gbajabiamila and Desmond Elliot appeared like a textbook. The powerful political godfather from Surulere built a formidable structure rooted in loyalty and strategic dominance. The grateful protégé, armed with celebrity appeal and political ambition, entered the arena carrying the blessings of the establishment. Then came the impeachment saga that tested everything.

In May 2026, Gbajabiamila revealed that his reputation was jeopardised because of Elliot’s involvement in a plot to impeach Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Elliot was accused of masterminding the move.

President Bola Tinubu reportedly questioned Gbajabiamila about his ties to the movement, as security reports suggested he was the silent backer behind the crisis.

The Chief of Staff to the President found himself in an uncomfortable position, forced to answer for a protégé’s ambition.

Gbajabiamila claimed he advised Elliot to distance himself from the group. According to him, the lawmaker failed to do so publicly at the time. The silence from Elliot, whether strategic or avoidant, allowed the narrative to fester. What emerged was a classic Lagos political drama: the godfather suspected of controlling the protégé, and the protégé acting without the godfather’s blessing.

Elliot has since issued a public apology to Gbajabiamila, referring to him as his “daddy” and political mentor. He admitted to signing the impeachment notice but denied masterminding the plot, claiming he thought the order came from the Presidency. Whether that explanation satisfies Gbajabiamila remains unclear. What is clear is that the relationship has changed.
