Niger NUT Adopts Rotation as Principle for Electing Leaders

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Niger State wing, has adopted the principle of rotation among primary and secondary school members for the election of its state and local government  officials.

The adoption of the principle is to avoid acrimony and infighting as well as bring unity and togetherness among members.

The state Chairman of the Union, Mohammed Adamu Akayago, disclosed this yesterday in Minna at a one-day interactive session with the executives of the Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Niger State chapter, held at the Teachers House.

In the programme which the theme: ‘Internal Democracy In Trade Unions: The NUT Perspective’, Akayago declared that the Niger State wing is one of the few states in the country that has adopted a conventional electoral arrangement for its state elected officers and branches where both primary and post-primary school teachers are treated as one indivisible family, and leadership positions are conventionally shared and smoothly rotated among primary and post-primary school teachers respectively.

“I wish to appeal to my colleagues who are clamouring for separation to give their intention a second thought and desist from such idea in the interest of togetherness, because united we stand, divided we fall,” Akayago declared.

He sued for unity among all categories of teachers, “so that we can have absolute understanding and teamwork from our teachers for better productivity.”

The state Head of Service, Alhaji Abubakar Salisu, in his address, assured them that the government would intensify the capacity-building of teachers to be able to discharge their responsibilities as expected.

Salisu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Human Resources, Alhaji Aliyu Goro, challenged the participants to redouble their efforts in the discharge of their duties as the government is determined to improve the standard of teaching and learning in schools in the state.
