‘Impressions of Reality’ Opens Thursday

A solo exhibition titled: ‘Impressions of Reality’ opens on October 19 at the Wings Towers along Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The exhibition will feature the paintings of the Lagos-based artist Jonathan “Mavua” Lessor, who marks his 30 years of art practice.

On until Wednesday, October 25, the exhibition has the blessings and goodwill of a cavalcade of corporate sponsors like Seven Up Bottling Company, Rand Merchant Bank and De Real Properties, among others, as well as leading Lagos-based art aficionados.

Lessor, who graduated from the Federal Polytechnic in Auchi, has held several exhibitions and owes his renown in the contemporary Nigerian art scene to his hard work and determination. His works, which are much sought-after among both local and international collectors, represent his visual take on his environment.
“My works are not exactly a copy from life but my opinion about life as defined by my nature,” he corroborates in his Artist Statement.
“In truth, as we have it today, most of what surrounds us is anything but beautiful. Ugly forms dominate our world and we are shrouded and enmeshed in it. This is the challenge. With my works, I attempt to subscribe to the ideal and stimulate reflections. My primary motive is aesthetics, since all human endeavours can be summarised in beauty.”

It is the artist’s endeavour to coax beauty from out of the prevalent chaos in his environment that the viewer discerns in the works “Business Energy”, “Shadow of a City”, “Buzzy Night”, “Faces of Depression”, “Heartbeat of Lagos”, “Piping Light” and “Gold and Crystals,” among others.
