While Away…

Gov Adams Oshiomhole

I  had been on a short vacation. But while away, a couple of incidents took place that demand a reflection.

The Edo Wonders
Two incidents happened in Edo State. First, it was the shocking ability, or the lack of it, of a female teacher in Edo State who could not read a one-page document in simple English. It was a prepared document of some affidavit. Despite the patient and repeated guide of Gov Adams Oshiomhole, the lady continued to falter and fumble in the reading test. She was not under fright or tension as to explain, for instance, why she pronounced “register” as “registrate”, since she laughed foolishly a couple of times.

The video of the show of shame has gone viral and advertises why we are as we are. To think that that degree of incompetence had been in the system for 20 years beats my imagination. But before I ask what has happened to her and her career, I dare ask how she ever passed her exams even in primary school. It was a celebrated shame!

And talking about shame, it was another act of shame when, in the same Edo State, a 13-year-old boy, Daniel Ohikhena beat the array of uniformed security men at the Benin airport and fixed himself up in the tyre compartment of Arik plane, and successfully stowed away to Lagos, thinking that the plane would land in America, his dream land.

So much has been said about the security implication of that incident in these days of manifold terrorism. But the greater shame will be that nothing will happen to those who caused this shameful slip. It happened in Port Harcourt airport (Air France plane running into cows on the tarmac); in Calabar, (rickety taxi cab ramming into Arik plane on the tarmac)… nothing happened, or so we think.
