Major Hamza Al-Mustapha

Northern Emirs and Chiefs Thursday denied report, that they met early in the week in Kaduna, to take a position on the conviction of former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to late Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, who was sentenced to death by hanging by a Lagos High Court.

The Northern Emirs in a reaction through the Emir of Kazaure, Dr. Najib Hussaini Adamu, who attended the meeting, said insinuations in a section of the media to the effect that they met over the plight of Al-Mustapha were “crude, false and uncharitable.”
Though he confirmed that the Emirs met in Kaduna, he however insisted that the meeting had nothing to do with the conviction of Al-Mustapha by the court.

“We had the serious business of studying a document prepared by a committee of 10, to advise our Northern state governors on how to prevent these frequent and disturbing problems of crises in the North,” Adamu said in a statement he signed.
According to Adamu, “In the first instance, this meeting was called 10 days before the judgment was given. The day the court convicted him was the day of the arrival of the Emirs and Chiefs. How could the issue be on our agenda?”

Adamu, who is also a lawyer, said the matter of Al-Mustapha was subjudice hence could not have been a subject of discussion by the monarchs. “Nobody, not even the President can meddle in that case now because it is before the courts. Nobody can touch it unless it is over,” Adamu said.

He called on discerning members of the public to discountenance any such reports associating the Kaduna meeting with the convictions of the former CSO to Abacha.

  • To meet or not to meet that judge did a commendable because they don't want him to appeal his case to get rid of Lagos they only want to see him rot without judgement, so KUDOS to Mrs Dada for allowing this case to travel from a selfish ground to where he will face reality, we strongly believe in the system of our judiciary, and everyone should please shut-up!

  • The newspapers that reported that the northern traditional leaders and the Arewa Consultative Forum met over the Al Mustapha verdict simply created fiction and published it as news. Pity. One good reason why it is dangerous to trust what you read in newspapers. But it is even more tragic when attention seekers and the so-called human rights activists" comment on such reports without even trying to cross-check the facts: I was at that meeting with my boss invited to be in attendance the entire duration of the meeting. Not once was the name of Al Mustapha mentioned nor was there any reference the court case. What does Shehu Sani gained by rebuking the traditional leaders on mere falsehood published as news? And why drag up the name of Saro Wiwa? What is the connection? Only troublemakers like Shehu Sani seek to score cheep publicity on the misfortune of others! Who really is SHEHU SANI by the way???

  • @Sadiq@Mohammed. This is the tragedy of Nigeria. If Al-Mustapha committed the crimes he is being prosecuted for, why should royal fathers plead for him? Who will plead for the families of those that were killed? The issue here should be ensuring justice is done, and seen to be done. Nobody should interfere in this matter. If royal fathers from each part of the country continue to plead for their criminal sons, we will continue to degenerate

  • The emirs have suddenly woken from slumber after thousands of people have been murdered by the so called boko haram. They should know that the idea of rulership puts lots of responsibilities on our traditional rulers to swiftly move and dounce tension thrgh the use of their ties with their subjects ;and that is what they are paid for.The minsstry for chieftancy affairs should always send these community leaders on training to drive home what the country expects of them;they should not be driving around in expensive cars with security personels while their people are being roasted under an uncivilised religious tenents.
