Tyler-perry
I do not like Tyler Perry movies. I think as the only serious black movie-maker in America Tyler should have, after many years, moved from his basic scripts to something deeper, more engaging and cerebral.
Frankly, I’d choose a KunleAfolayan’s Figurine or Phone Swap over a Tyler Perry movie any day. Away from the gloss of having advanced technology, nothing else works for Tyler’s movies really. In my opinion he is just a few notches higher than pedestrian Nollywood.
I like his hustle no doubt, and to a large extent the wealth he has acquired doing what he does makes a mockery of my stance but still I believe he isn’t advancing the black community with his movies; and it would take more creative scripts that would push the envelope for him to get Hollywood’s respect; not because he is black but his movies are clearly too elementary and thus embarrassing. For whatever it’s worth, I shall be watching his latest work “good deeds” starring the beautiful Gabrielle Union when it starts airing on DSTV soon.
