The United States Consulate has endorsed renowned non-profit organisation, United Way Nigeria, following its contributions to the nation’s human capital development and efforts to tackle social vices. The endorsement came at the re-inauguration of the organisation which held recently in Lagos.

United Way Nigeria is the Nigerian chapter of United Way Worldwide, an organisation with presence in over 45 countries and 1,800 communities across the globe. The movement ranks number one on Forbes list of the largest charities in the US, having raised over $5 billion in donations in 2010.

“I think United Way is well positioned to do a lot of good in this country,” said US Consul General in Nigeria, Jeffrey Hawkins, while speaking at the event which was attended by newsmen and varying professionals. “Its plans for Nigeria are very significant to the US; so I want to urge, encourage and thank United Way Nigeria,” he said. On her part, Chairperson, United Way Nigeria, Joke Coker,  explained that the re-inauguration was aimed at engaging various stakeholders to successfully collaborate to improve lives in Nigeria, a move which she said would involve Diaspora Nigerians and other partners in the group’s intervention initiatives.

“Across the world, United Way partners with existing local NGOs and private sector players towards achieving a sustainable intervention aligned to the United Way global business model,” she said.
