The-four-students-killed

Moved by the bestial and barbaric manner in which some four persons suspected to be students of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Port Harcourt, were hacked to death by some natives over the weekend, the men of the Rivers State Police Command Sunday embarked on a mass arrest of people in Omuokiri Community, Aluu, where the killing took place.

THISDAY gathered that among those arrested was the traditional ruler of Omuokiri village of Aluu, Alhaji Hassan Welewa.

The arrests came just as the Rivers State Government and other stakeholders have expressed outrage over the mindless killing. The four male undergraduate students were killed last Friday by a mob in a community adjoining the university for alleged armed robbery.

Another version had it that the students were cult members who had gone on a failed ‘hit.’

The incident attracted wild outrage given how the students were crudely debased, beaten, and eventually hacked to death by the villagers, many of whom gleefully posted the video clips of the beating and killing on the internet. Watching  it on the social media, enraged many.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ben Ugwuegbulam, did not take his calls or respond to text messages to confirm the arrest.

However, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, while speaking on a radio programme monitored in Port Harcourt yesterday, confirmed the arrest of the traditional ruler and others suspected to be involved in the murder.

She said the state Governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, found the incident unacceptable and reprehensible. She said the government was alarmed at the gruesome killings and had ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.

“This crime will not go unpunished,” she said, adding that the traditional ruler and other suspects had been arrested by the police for interrogation.
Listeners who phoned in during the radio programme widely condemned the incident, saying it was absurd that people would stand by and watch while four persons were being killed, only to post the video online.

The spokesman of the university, Mr. Williams Wodi, however said the institution was yet to confirm if the people killed were actually students of the university. Wodi said in a text message, “Right now, I am not in a position to confirm to you that the alleged victims are bona fide students of UNIPORT as is being widely speculated.

“The alleged incident took place at Aluu village about two kilometres outside our main campus. We do not have responsibility for security in Aluu communities, which are beyond our jurisdiction.

“The relevant security outfits are working with our security department to establish the true identities of the victims and what actually transpired on the day of the incident.

However, THISDAY gathered that students of the university who were to march on Aluu community Sunday were prevailed upon to allow the security agencies carry out their duties.

The immediate past President of the Student Union Government (SUG) of the university, Mr. Rhino Owhorkire, told THISDAY that students had already gathered but they had to cancel the protest for fear that it could be hijacked by hoodlums to cause more problems.

He said they were certain that the victims were students of the university as some of their course mates had identified them.

He dismissed claims in some quarters that the victims were robbers. “We do not believe they were robbers. If actually they were robbers, what and where are the items they stole, and who had come up to state that the victims stole from them?” he queried.
Owhorkire, who is also a native of Aluu, said: “We totally condemn the act by this Aluu community. It is a shame that we can kill ourselves in such a brutal manner.”

He, however, said students of the institution were satisfied with the response of the Rivers State Government, which had ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.

He said the students were aware of the mass arrest of people, including the traditional ruler of the village, adding that some students were among those arrested as they also lived in the community.

A former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, also expressed outrage over the killing of the UNIPORT students as well as the killing of about 46 students from three tertiary institutions in Mubi, Adamawa State last Tuesday.

She said the Federal Government must prove it is in charge of the Nigerian situation by ensuring that it brings to justice the murderers of the students.
Anything short of this, she added, would make impunity the norm in the country and precipitate Nigeria’s descent into anarchy.

Ezekwesili, who spoke over the weekend in Abuja in a reaction to the killing of the students, said the Ministry of Justice and the police must pursue these cases to a logical conclusion as soon as possible.

“We have to watch it. A lot of countries that have had genocidal experience started like this. We have too many problems to descend into a state of anarchy again. How can we all sit and watch impunity becomes the order of the day? The government has to re-establish itself. The killing of these innocent students must not go off the news” she said.

She wondered what had happened to the society that human lives have no value again and people have no qualms killing others.

“When people know that the rule of law is predictable, they do not behave recklessly as we are seeing now. But when you have a society and people believe the consequences are profitable, it suggests a breakdown of the rule of law.

“Is this not the same country where it is emotionally difficult when you see a corpse on the street?  The killings were barbaric, mere savagery and very devastating. Some people are acting or behaving as if there are no people in charge of the government. Something is fundamentally wrong with our society. To see the dastardly mob killing of four misguided youths who stole sank my optimism. No! Even in death, these four must get justice. My voice shall be heard on this. What have we become?

“We used to be better than this. What has psychologically traumatised our people? There is a fundamental problem; there is a breakdown in something that is proudly Nigeria. I cannot believe that our society has gotten to this level. We are broken, we need to be mended and nobody will mend it other than ourselves.

  • Thank you, Oby Ezekwesili, for speaking as you have.If those claiming to be representing us have the same sense of disgust at this barbaric and senseless killing of innocent students(in Nigerian law they swore to protect, you are assumed innocent until proven so), then this would not have happened. Neither would the youths be restive, as seems to be the case, But no, This will ultimately lead to more loss of young lives in street protests, and other resistance before these "Bigmen" would get sensible.
You can imagine how much past the level of humane feeling it is for this to happen in a university community, for that is what Aluu is. It is more troubling for the university PRO to be sitting in comfort abd spurning thrash about the identity of these four, as if it would require rocket scientists to establish who these students are. Absolute irresponsibility

  • All you re seeing today is bottled up anger over poverty waiting to explode! At the slightest opportunity such anger explodes!! The Nigerian leaders have such traumatised Nigerians that they can only vent their anger at slightest provocation as in all these killings. The security forces must sniff out those involved in this barbaric

  • Still can not believe my eyes. Is what i'm seing fiction or real? No, it can't be true, innocent lives just go like that? Lets even assume they were armed robbers as aledged, is that the punishment for armed robbers in Nigeria? are members of some communities bigger than the law? Learnt one of the victims was the only child of his parents, to worsen matters. The souls of these guys are asking for justice, this community will never see peace untill justice is done and soonest.

Are there no God-fearing people in this Aluu Community? What is this country becoming? I join Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili in demanding that Justice must be seen to be done in this case. I AM VERY SADDENED!

  • The Ocean can not drown the person it does not get into contact with, Why will under every element of civility, students leave thier abodes, go to another students abode to ehibit their machoism by way of constituting themselves into enforcecers to recover debt and in the process of such a failed enforced debt recovery confiscate a phone and a laptop belonging to their follow student in such a lawless manner within a lawless community such as Aluu??? what would one expect from the spuntanous chainlinked reactions of such a lawless band of persons, the murdered students, their debtor friend and the Aluu Community People??? Our youths should devoid themselves of these unessary exorbitances and face their studies. If they had been their houses preparing for the days activities on that fateful Friday morning we would not have experienced this holocaust. We never know what we have until wev lose it! What a pity! May their souls rest in peace. Aluu community vigilante groups should stop taking the law into their hands! This fundamentally is as a result of the failure of the Police. Who needs an uncoordinated gang of performers if the NPF is adeqately functional

  • I did my NYSC in a school on the island of Brass in Bayelsa state. The school was right at the edge of the island in a community called Okpoma, this sort of jungle justice was and probably is still the norm. You steal and they beat you or flog you to death. The Police station on the island was dead, not one police there and the only security presence one would see was the mopol fort he Agip offices based there.
Some areas of the nation have been abandoned and left to rule their communities as they desire, once there was a witch hunt in the community and based on who the "babalawo" selected as a witch people were buried alive with their heads showing and then stoned to death (even the community has a video of these killings). In summary, this barbaric behavior has just come to light in this instance but is deeply rooted in our environment and different communities, and something needs to be done about it before it goes further out of hand.

  • I have some questions: How long did this torture take place? How come the police force in that entire didn’t respond fast enough to arrest the guys and remove them from the community for their safety? If it is true that the community had been continually harassed by robbers and rapists why didn’t the police take proactive action? If the police had provided adequate security for the community would they have set up an armed vigilante group? In a society where the formal and organized justice system does not work, mob action and jungle justice is inevitable. This has happened, will happen and continue to happen if the government does not wake up to its responsibilities.

  • It is totally disgusting, utterly reprehensible, unacceptable, profoundly barbaric and highly repugnant to one's sense of human dignity that in this 21st century Nigeria, human beings could be so bestially and brutally murdered amidst clapping of hands. I wonder what has become of our culture which holds human life sacred. Where do we really go from here? How will the rest of the world look at us?

I am also appalled by the statements credited to the University's PRO. Does it really matter if the victims were students of the University or not and does it take ages to establish their true identities?

Let the security agencies do a thorough job, please.

1 . Have you ever heard or seen cultist going for a hit without weapons of knives ? maybe uniport cultist kill with their bare hands.
    2. Have u seen robbers caught with no weapon or exhibit found with them ? maybe aluu community can answer that.
Two of the boys killed (ugbonna and L) went to Aluu to spend a night with a friend but on their way coming back they met Chiadika and Lloyd who agreed to accompany them to retrieve some money a student and indigene of Aluu owes Ugbonna and in trying to retrieve the money a scuffle ensued and the 4 students where rounded up and branded as criminals without any evidence to backup the claim.
Now ask yourself why did no one come forward to lay a claim about any missing property?
Why was no gun or even knife shown as a slight evidence to back up their claim?
I rest my case………………….R.I.P to the uniport 4

  • I happen to be a student of the university and this is by far the most gory incident we've ever experienced. What is the difference between the 'alleged cultists or robbers' and those that executed 'jungle justice' on them.It brings me to tears every time I see a picture or hear the names of any of those boys cos they were just too young to be killed in such a gruesome manner. The government really needs to intervene in this matter and bring a lasting solution to the unrest in our societies. Also I plead with the Rivers State govt to ensure the security of the students in that area because this is likely to turn out to be an all-out war in the University. God heal our land.

  • Please my fellow Nigerians,we all have to speak out in issues like this.On no condition should law be taken into our hands. Many innocent souls have gone just like that. This is indeed a very big blow on Nigerian force men.Where were the police men when these boys were being toutured? It means everyone's life is in Danger in that country if these boys after all the time it took before they finally burnt them no single police showed,Exactly this kind of incident happened to my brother about 4 years ago he was being beaten up with matchet and other sharp instruments for crime he knew nothing about. My boy who was coming back from his school runs on his way back home,he heard pple shouting thief thief thief,he jumped down from the byk he was on to run for his cover unfortunatly he was arrested because coincidentaly the main robbers came with byke too.Oh! that memory will never go off my mind.In my presence my brother was being touturd in a hard way that he almost fainted. As God may have it someone saw when the real robber ran inside a bush and asked some of the guide to search for him in a bush,on getting inside the bush they saw the robber with the stolen bag.Only God knows what would have been of my brother if the robber was't found. Please we should have a good law abiding our citizens,Lets not see life to be valueless,If anyone commits crime keep him over the bar investigate on the case even if it takes years to know the true fact is better than killing. Please Please and please our Government shoud do something about this barbaric acts in Nigeria because is getting out of hands.Who knows who it will be tomorrow? It might be my brother or sister it might be yours.

  • The breakdown in soceital norms in our country does not stem from poverty or unemployment. Imagin what would happen in a village where the village chief sleeps with other peoples wives or his deputy kills the goat that wandered into his compound, the goat belongs to a poor widow. In the two cases of the chief and his deputy, nothing is done according to these rulers in the village, because they are the people in charge. Others in the village can go and steal, rape and commit adultry with the audacity that nothing will be done because the leaders also do it. What is fundamentally wrong in our sioceity, giving rise to a breakdown in soceital norms stems from corruption in high places in our country. Stealing of public funds in millios and billions, sponsored assasination of whoever is in their way, victimisation or transfer and unwarranted posting of those who speak the truth, manipulation of truth and pervation of justice in the name of rule of law and other criminal acts. These are always done with brazen impunity. The people in high places are never called to order when they do these. In ninety percent of cases, they use the small people to carry out these atrocities. By this , the small people know what is happening in the soceity, and they know how crime is not punished. Impunity invariably transcends down the lader from top to bottom. Stealing of public and company funds, duping, rape, assasination, unforgiveness, kidnapping, adultration of products, exammination cheating and all vices become the oder of the day. Nobody will mend it other than ourselves. We can only start mending it by punishing the people in high places to tell the people in low places that they also will not be spared, and in deed nobody, no matter whose ox is gored. This is when people will know that the rule of law is preditable.

  • This killing is so barbaric and bizarre that it bothers on the unbelievable. That Nigerians have descended to such primitive and callously wicked levels is scary and painful.
It seems poverty has so debased Nigerians that it has eroded kindness, human feelings, and brotherly love. Case in point being the Mubi murders as well.
This act also showcases the total disregard, loss of confidence and disbelief in government’s ability to handle anything correctly, reflecting systemic failure in all aspect of life.
For example, the anger and outrage now been expressed aside, I read with disbelief and total disgust this morning the Magistrate presiding on the murder case Cynthia Osokogu begging Police and Department of Public Prosecution to please work, and come to court and not abandon case??????????
So after all the front page outrage (including the Police giving themselves award for arresting suspects captured only because the hotel had functioning cctv) this is the direction the case is going when even the victim has not or just been buried?????????
Little wonder then what the Police and Government will make of this callous murder of Nigerian youths besides the spontaneous initial outrage and the soon to come ‘uniform’ rhetoric (with the details only changed) of how the perpetuators will be apprehended … blab bla bla.
In reality too, a lot of Nigeria (as an entity) is not actively policed with the communities left to their own fate, whilst the Police and their bosses jostle for plum postings in Nigeria’s cities. The number of policemen and manpower in security convoys hiLUX and other pickups and jeeps could be better utilised elsewhere, but rather used by our ‘leaders’ to safeguard themselves, at the masses expense (when by their corrupt behaviours and wealth , they do not feel safe moving amongst Nigerians – but move around unprotected overseas).
Ezekwesili: Well-done madam. We need more leaders (and mothers) like you would will speak up on issues that touch the fibre of our existence. I can imagine if the issue was 2015, oil subsidy, or who abused a late sage (of blessed memory of course), we would have gotten more front page reactions from our leaders tantamount to the global one that trailed the equally gruesome and still remembered Norwegian massacre.
    God help us.

Our major problem is with our leaders, The council member, LGA Chairman, State Governor, state and federal representatives, the police are all corrupt. Their sons and daughters are in better schools overseas. How then can they feel for the less privileged? They State Governor and his subordinates may use the microphone and press to announce all kinds of probes or investigations but they killings will continue and lawlessness will persist until they are all swept away by a revolution soon to come. When that comes, I advocate even in retirement, they should all be brought back to face peoples' justice...

  • THOU SHALL NOT KILL. THUS SAY THE LORD, BUT IF ONE OF YOUR EYES WILL DEPRIVE YOU FROM THE KINGDOM CUT IT OFF.. IF WHAT HAPPENED IN MUBI WAS APPREHENDED EARLIER AND THE BOYS KILLED, INSTEAD OF KILLING THE 40+-THE NIGERIAANS WHO DOES NOT KNOW THAT PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE COULD HAVE BEEN WRITNG ALOT OF GRAMMER NOW THAT ITS ONLY 4 INSTEAD OF 40.BUT IF I MAY ASK, WHAT WHERE THE STUDENTS OR THEIVES OR CULT OR TERIORIST DOING IN AN UNCOMPLETED BUILDING AT THAT TIME?( IF YOU GO TO THE BUSH AND GET FIREWOOD WITH ANTS YOU INVITED ANTS TO YOUR HOUSE)FELLOW NIGERIAANS SEE ME AS A( REFREE) WE HAVE LAW IN NIGERIA AND IF YOU WILL BELIEVE ME YOU WILL RIGHTFULLY KNOW THA IF THESE GUYS WHERE TAKING TO LAWINFORCEMENT AGENCY(POLICE) THEY WILL BE AT HOME B4 YOU WHO BROUGHT THEM..IN KADUNA CRIMINALS WERE AMONG RECRUITED PERSONS IF NOT GOD INTERVENTION. FELLOW NIGERIAANS ITS THIS WAY ROUND WHAT OF THE OTHER WAY ROUND ,THAT THEIR PLANS WAS EXECUTED.STOP BLAMING THE GOVERNMENT OR JONATHAN. IF THE BOYS WHERE SLEPPING IN THERE ROOMS THEN WE CAN BLAME SOMEBODY. PERSONALLY I HAVE TAKEN A SUSPECT TO THE POLICESTATION IN ABA TO BE PRECISE THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE DETAINED B4 I COME BACK HOME THEY WERE ALREADY IN THEIR HOUSE, THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT SOME NIGERIAANS HAVE LOST INTEREST IN SECUIRTY OPERATIVE IN THE COUNTRY.

  • Rotimi Amaechi, et al. You guys want to come to Washington DC to solict for investors on Wednesday. If I show or divert the panel's attention to this barbaric act to them here do you think your coming will not be a waste of resources and time? Although it is not your fault, but it is the fault of the system which is resisting to change. For instance, you are asking for State Police and some states said no. Even the president said no. This shame of a nation will continue.

  • Ooh my beloved country Nigeria, what has happened to you? How did you reach this level of dehumanization and degredation? When will you arise to the light of truth and dignity? When will you arise leave the darkness and thickness engulfing you, which you have accepted with two bare hands? Ooh Nigeria, my mother land...I cry with my heart out of its place that you receive mercy being offered you from on high and wake up from the gruesome darkness that wants to eternally deny you of your dignity and destiny. Please open your mind to truth and light, don't become obstinate my dear motherland. It will be good to your navel and soundness to your soul my beautiful country home. Let good news and testimonies exhume from you from now Nigeria. May nations come to your rising and kings to the brightness of your shinning; never again will evil overcome you and may you fulfil purpose and destiny...I cry and await with hope for your dawning Nigeria.

  • I am so saddened by this news, just about a week after the killings of over 40 students in Mubi, Adamawa state, by unknown gunmen . I challenge the media to rise to the occasion always, by not letting go until the killers of innocent Nigerians are found and punished accordingly. They should not choose which murder case to retain in the news and which to shrug over , as if some lives don't count because life is life, regardless of whose and from which part of the country it is violently taken by the murderers in our mids.

  • ALL, Welcome to reality Naija, am so so shocked to know that most Nigerians are only coming to terms with the state of disrepair the country has gotten to. Then I will say Thank you to Aluu community for making us come back to our senses. it's a pity that those young souls had to pay the price but this is Nigeria for you. How come we are just noticing these, Don't tell me that Nigerians are not aware that such type of killing goes on daily in our beloved country.!! in case we have forgotten Boko Haram Leader was just killed after being detained by our so called police. suspected rubbers are killed in the front of police stations without any form of trial. I wonder why the nation is just waking up from their slumber just for that simple fact that a courageous person captured the killing and made the world see what Nigeria has turned to. if we only heard about the story, it would gone unnoticed or maybe forgotten as we did many other. My concern is that people focus much on the after effect rather than the root cause. What took police that long time to respond am sure that incident took some hours, if they were actually rubbing that community that's how they all would have died without help from the so call security agents.

  • The social media is a disease. I am not a native of Aluu but I graduated from UNIPORT far back in 1992. Unfortunately some of the students in the school these days are wrong headed ones. In fact some of them are 'part time' students and full time criminals. I am not justifying the fate that befell them but people should note that that community has been in hell for months now. The community have suffered high level criminality and rape of the old and young women. Even the lives of students living in the community have been in danger. I have been to that community severally and have a lecturer friend there, and I attest to the fact that the village is inhabited by so many people, indigenes and foreigners. They live peacefully in the day but at night I don't know about all that happens there. My advise is that young men should be careful in their movements because I suspect that for these guys to be fished out by the community means that they are thieves. They didn't steal from me but from all indications they are criminals. Again extrajudicial murders didn't start from Aluu. It is a common practice everywhere in Nigeria - Lagos, Onitsha, Kano, Makurdi, etc. If anybody disturbs any community so bad they simply catch and dispatch you, jungle style. So, young men, mind how you move and stop stealing and raping women.

  • I hope that the Federal executive council will devote some quality time in its weekly meeting on Wednesday to deal decisively on the barbaric and dastardly murdering of the uniport four. This killing , one too many but uncharacteristically different in its audacious execution has more than ever before called to question the capacity of government to redirect the nation from the path of lawlessness and impunity. For once, as the arm of government in charge of policy execution, they owe Nigerians the duty of ensuring, through the practical action of fishing out the perpetrators and bringing them to book , that the citizens should still believe and trust them to protect their lives and properties. We have had enough of pronouncements from the national assembly on such issues that are almost in all cases treated as "advisory".

  • Nigerians are hypocrites . Is this not the norm in a town like Aba in Abia State?
We as a people called Nigerians must stop deceiving ourselves, the country needs a total overhaul, and I don't see GEJ as the messiah who will liberate us.

  • Can someone please tell me what kind of justice armed robbers mete out to individual lives and families they have destroyed without recourse to justice in a land devoid of law and order; in a land where the armed robber and the policeman share similar profiles. Nigeria's political leadership is bankrupt because it is incapable of securing life and property, the primary function of any civilized human settlement.
