Lebanese airport officials say the international envoy for Syria's civil war has arrived in Beirut and will travel by land to Damascus to meet with the country's president.

The officials said Lakhdar Brahimi would travel to the Syrian capital by land because of fighting near its airport, reports The Associated Press.

He is to meet with President Bashar Assad to discuss the 21-month-old crisis.

Brahimi did not speak publically upon his arrival in Beirut Sunday.

Brahimi has made little apparently progress toward finding a negotiated solution to Syria's civil war, mostly because neither side appears interested in talks.

Anti-regime activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since Syria's crisis began in March 2011.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.
