Alhaji Bamanga Tukur
Senator Iroegbu and Adedayo Akinwale
The Network of Civil Society Organisations In Nigeria (NCSON) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum on the National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to be suspended from office for violating their oath of office by misleading the people with false information and disobeying a court and presidential order to conduct Ward congress in Adamawa State.
The National Coordinator of NCSON, Mr. Kalu Onyedikachi, disclosed this yesterday at a press conference in Abuja, where he issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the state chapter of the party for the immediate cancellation of the illegal Ward Congresses held in the state or get suspended with PDP boss.
Onyedikachi explained that Tukur and the NWC erred by supporting actions that were detrimental to the tenets of democracy by disregarding the court order restraining the PDP in the state from conducting the election until all the issues of factional fighting were resolved.
He urged Tukur to follow the part of by instructing the state secretariat of the party to suspend the ongoing congress.
The group stated that the state had had enough of its own share of political, religious and security challenges, stressing that anything that may cause any form of upheaval in the state should be suspended in the interest of peace.
He said: “Tukur should show maturity, integrity and patriotism by suspending the on-going congresses as a mark of respect to Mr. president, who has already set up a committee to look into the party crisis in the state and wait patiently for the out-come of the presidential committee, this Nigerians will value as an honour to Mr. president and the nation rather that exposing how desperate he is in trying to mortgage the party.”
He added that to promote internal democracy and respect to the rule of law, the group called for: “immediate cancellation of the illegal Ward Congresses conducted by Bamanga Tukur, and co and subsequent suspension of further congresses in the state pending the outcome of the presidential committee.
“Immediate suspension of Bamanga Tukur as the national chairman of the PDP and the members of the National Working Committee for violating their oath of office as regards promoting tenets of democracy, misleading the people with false information and most of all disobeying presidential order for national unity.”
“We demand for an immediate public apology from Bamanga Tukur and the members of the National working committee of the party to Nigerians. They have less than 48 hours to act as we are ready to mobilise our teaming members all across the country to enforce compliance to our demand for national unity and value for our maturing democracy,” he added.
He stated that the group was not out to protect anybody but to defend the rule of law stressing that court injunction and presidential order should be respected by all irrespective of class as such an order should not be violated by anybody.
Onyedikachi said that it is disheartening that some elder statesman, distinguished senators of the Federal Republic and other respected personalities from the states have sold their conscience to the altar of selfishness and greed and have continually engaged in inciting and unguarded utterances rather than preaching the message of peaceful co-existence.
