A soldier attached to the Special Task Force (STF) on Jos Crisis has shot and killed a security officer with the University of Jos, Plateau State.

An eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Shehu, said the incident took place along Yakubu Gowon Way, Aglo-Jos by NASCO quarters, Jos at about 11:30am on Saturday.

The victim, a passenger in an Opel Vectra car, was heading towards Terminus Park in Jos central area when he met his death.

The driver of the commercial vehicle, Salisu Musa, was said to have taken a one-way allegedly due to traffic congestion on the dual carriage road.

One of the soldiers at a checkpoint in the area halted the vehicle and asked the driver to reverse and return to his lane, in the process of reversing another soldier opened fire on the vehicle, resulting in the death of the Unijos security staff, Mr. Dauda Wagley.

The bullet that killed the victim first went through the right arm of the driver before hitting Wagley on the chest.
The driver and the deceased were taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where he was confirmed dead.

The driver is said to be responding to treatment.
This development created tension in Jos for the rest of the day as shops and other business premises hurriedly closed for the day.

Only last week, another STF soldier shot and killed a police inspector after a heated argument in Mikang.

Spokesman of the STF, Captain Salisu Mustapha, who confirmed the incident in a media briefing at the STF headquarters, Jos yesterday said, “On the 16th of February 2013, at about 11:30am, an unfortunate incidence happened where a personnel of the STF on duty shot a driver of an Opel Vectra with registration number EW-336-AA (Lagos), Mr. Salisu Musa and a passenger Mr. Wagley Dauda (staff of University of Jos security department).”

Mustapha said, “Preliminary investigation conducted revealed that the soldier attempted to stop the driver, who took one-way (opposite direction) while approaching his guard location at Green Park, NASCO quarters Jos.

“However the driver failed to stop and instead tried to manoeuvre his way out despite the soldier’s instruction for him to stop. The driver’s action was suspicious, consequently the soldier cocked and released a shot which pierced through the left shoulder of the driver and unfortunately hit Mr. Wagley Dauda on his chest.

“The victims were immediately evacuated to JUTH for treatment by personnel of the STF. However, Mr. Dauda died while receiving treatment.

“Meanwhile the soldier is under custody undergoing investigation,” said the STF spokesman

Mustapha described the driver’s action as lawless and suspicious considering the high level of insecurity in the country.

He said the incidence was worrisome considering the circumstances which led to it.
