The gory details of how 24-year-old Cynthia Osokogu, the only daughter of Maj.-Gen. Frank Osokogu (rtd) and his wife, Joy, met her death in Lagos emerged Wednesday as the police paraded two suspects for her murder.

On parade were two undergraduates, Okwuoma Echezona Nwabufo and Ezekiel Odera Ilechukwu Olisa, both maternal cousins, who masterminded Cynthia’s killing in a Lagos hotel room.

The police brought them before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, to give account of how they lured her from her Nasarawa State base and subsequently killed her.

Unknown to Cynthia, the offer by Nwabufo and Olisa to supply her clothing items for her boutique, ‘Dress Code,’ which prompted her July 22 trip to Lagos, was a decoy for a more sinister plot.

The suspects, who met their victim on a Blackberry Messenger Group and had presented themselves to her as businessmen when they met, were alleged to have tied Cynthia up and sexually molested her, before she was finally murdered in a FESTAC Town hotel.

Their story was cold and bizarre. They told a stunned audience how they hatched the plan to lure Cynthia to Lagos and how they tortured and eventually strangled her to death.

The duo had hatched what they considered a foolproof plot and had executed it with clinical precision. Every detail of the plot was well thought out, right from booking a hotel room, to drugging her and dispossessing her of her valuables.

To facilitate their crime, they injected Rohypnol, a drug used on women which makes them dizzy and wipes out their memory after sex, into a pack of Ribena drink that they gave her.
In his confession, 33-year-old Nwabufo, a 300-level Accounting student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and mastermind of the dastardly act, said Cynthia’s death was a mistake as they did not plan to kill her.

According to him, “We first met on the internet and later when she said she wanted to come to Lagos to shop, I invited her and we accidentally killed her in Concilla Hotel. We thought she had plenty of money that I could collect; so, while she was struggling, I tied her with a chain and sellotaped her lips to prevent her from shouting.”

From his confession, even with the sellotape on her lips, they feared she could still shout and so pressed down her throat for some time until she choked to death. He also confessed that they beat her up before she died.

While there were indications that the deceased was raped as the police found some used condoms in the room, Nwabufo denied that she was sexually abused. Rather, he said the condom was used on a sex toy the deceased allegedly brought with her.

However, he could not explain why they would use a condom on the prototype of a male organ, as sex toys do not produce semen.

He said: “The condom that was found in the room was not used on her but was used on the sex toy she had with her. I inserted the condom on the sex toy, and used it on her and later dropped it there. I didn't sleep with her. If the police test the condom forensically, it will vindicate me.”

While blaming the devil for their evil actions, he said they ran because they suddenly realised that they committed a serious sin against the deceased.

Disclosing their modus operandi, he said the drug put inside the Ribena drink was bought by Olisa and was injected into the drink, but it was not strong enough as she still had the strength to struggle.

Further implicating himself, he said: “Although this is my first time in a murder, I have used the drugs like four times before Cynthia but none of the girls died. In other cases, I slept with them and after they took the drink, they would suffer memory loss of everything that happened to them. I have used hotels like Benny, Chelsea, Opera-Mini.”
Narrating his involvement in the incident, Olisa, also a 300-level student of Accounting in Anambra State University, Igbariam Campus, said he was invited by Nwabufo to help him dispossess the deceased of her valuables.

“He said I should buy Ribena and Rohypnol, which I did. I injected about 10 tablets into the drink. In the process of binding the girl, she tried to struggle, and we maltreated and rough handled her and she passed out in the process. But I didn't hit her with anything.

“After we had manhandled her, Nwabufo told me that she had stopped breathing but when I touched her she was still breathing. Then I left the hotel. Later, he called me to say that he had not heard from her for a long time and had not seen her online. I was in school when they came on Sunday and arrested me," he said.

THISDAY gathered that the suspects were arrested when the police obtained the deceased’s call log and successfully contacted Olisa’s girlfriend who then aided in arresting him in Anambra State. Olisa in turn, implicated Nwabufo whose attempt to escape through the ceiling of his home, was aborted by the police.

The items recovered from the suspects include: seven driver's licences (three belonging to Olisa and the others bearing different names to Nwabufo); the deceased’s belongings, including her shoes found in Nwabufo’s house; 17 mobile phones, two Diamond Bank rubber stamps, two syringes, a pack of Ribena, 22 SIM cards, a chain as well as 12 debit and credit cards.

However, the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, debunked insinuations that the police did not conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

According to him, the only lead they had when the incident occurred was a call from an unknown person who called the receptionist of the hotel to say that they should go and remove the dead body of the ‘bastard’ from the room. This made the hotel management to break into the room where they found Cynthia's body. But they could not identify her as her assailants had taken away all documents or items to assist in her identification.

Manko said the police had to trace the killers through the phone number that called the receptionist, until they got her passport number from the internet. He said armed with that, they went through the Nigerian Immigration Service to establish her identity.

Manko said the police began arrest after watching the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage which showed two young men with the deceased.

He said the police during investigation were able to link the phone number with one of the men found on the CCTV.

He said: “The duo injected Rohypnol drug inside her drink but were disappointed when they searched her for money and did not find much. They struggled with her before she died in the process.”

  • until they got her passport number from the internet. Thats very strange, getting her passport number from the internet by the police, yet the same police said that everything to identify her was removed by the murders. So how was this possible? Could the police explain please how possible to get such information from somebody they did not know her name etc etc...Hmmm thinking Nigerian police want to take glory of what they did not do......However, may her soul rest in peace.

  • Quite a wicked act of life. More unfortunate is the kind of undergraduates that we have these days. While their counterparts elsewhere are engaged in scientific research, this type just use outcome of research to commit evil.
    Are they really maternal cousins?

  • Those who were castigating the poor girl on the web can now have a rethink, yes she may have been naive to trust the bastards who are her friends on the social network and who are of the same tribe with her, but you cant not accuse her of any immoral motive, those bastards deceived her that they have clothes to sell to her , which in her innocence she fell for, how many of us Nigerians in trust import and pay for things abroad which are eventually delivered to us? These bastards have murdered sleep, they have brought untold grief to an innocent family, they will never have peace on earth and a greater punishment awaits them in heaven ! Bastards!!!

  • The two men and their accomplices are deadly murderers and must be put away permanently for good. The last paragraph of this report if truly from police investigators as it appears 'The duo injected Rohypnol drug inside her drink but were disappointed................ They struggled with her before she died in the process' is very disturbing. It is clear from the accounts of the culprits that this is a case of premeditated homicide by strangulation visited on an innocent hard working young soul and must not be dressed at all. Both of the murderers must face maximum punishment for their heinous crime.

  • How can a 33 year old be allowed to remain in school as an undergraduate. At what age will he graduate, at what age will he start seeking for job, and at what age will he be able to find employment in Nigeria of today. Our educational policies needs a total review. If a student cannot graduate at most at 28 year of age, he should be expelled from the school. These people are pure cultist hanging around the campus. Banks and other employers limit their fresh graduate intake to age 25-27 years, and here was a man of 33 loitering around a university campus. An accident waiting to happen. Now this is the result. Very Sad indeeb.

  • Do we now say this guys were not well brought up by their parent or they just decided to live their lives carelessly, this is such a wicked and greedy attitude. Parents, please let always give our children unannounced visit in school on campuses, when they are out let do a though check of their room/apartment. ask questions about them from their friends, course mate, course advisers, teachers, room mates.we are not perfect but we should not cease from praying for our children. Imagine if they had succeeded in their mission and Cynthia was still alive with a total lost in memory of all that happened. They sure would be living large and being the envy of their colleagues. This is an eye opener for students out there, be careful what you wish for, who you hangout with and never be carried away by other student's way of life cause you never can be too sure what the source is.Okwuoma Echezona Nwabufo and Ezekiel Odera Ilechukwu Olisa may God almighty Judge you.

  • How true is it that they are maternal cousins? Is it that they know her but she doesnt know them or what? How were the Poilice able to get her passport number on net without her details, if there are no other details, then how did they know that the number was hers?

Anyway, the important thing is that the suspects have been found, we thank GOD for that and I think we need to talk to ourselves and loved ones on the danger of just meeting people on net and taking the risk of going to visit them - business or no business. May GOD have mercy on the soul of the deceased in JESUS CHRIST NAME I pray.

  • It is really frightening what some of our young ones are up to, these days! I mean, how can University students be up to something as sinister and wicked as what they have done to this poor girl? And to think that she actually happens to be their sixth victim, as reportedly confessed by them, actually makes the whole thing even more scary! I am just imagining the kind of double life these wicked souls may be living by committing such a heinous crime one moment (not once, but six times!), and the next moment they are busy attending classes and relating to their classmates, friends and family as if nothing happened!

It is also very sad that some people have completely bastardized the laudable concept/idea behind sites such as facebook, which is essentially to serve as a veritable avenue for people to meet and socialize. Instead, people like these devious undergraduates have chosen to use it as an easy and anonymous means of targeting, luring and murdering unsuspecting 'friends', who have trusted them enough to want to meet them in person.

As much as one abhors the death penalty, one still believes people like these two murderous and their accomplices do not deserve one more breath the moment their cases have been determined by the Courts and the appropriate sentence passed on them! May Cynthia's gentle soul Rest In Peace, and may God grant her family and trusted friends like Aisha the fortitude to bear her irreparable loss, Amen!

  • First and foremost, i want to sincerely sympathize with the family of the Osokogu's. May almighty God grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Too bad, just too bad and ugly incidence.

What is wrong with the Nigerian youth. Everything is all about self, criminality, killing, kidnapping, bombing, and the father of all corruption. I will argue that the social vices occasioned today is precipitated by the erroneous degrading of patriotism of the Nigerian citizen by the pantomime attitude and insincere acts of our leaders. This will stop one day.

Again, The CP of Lagos state, I salute you and your boys well breed investigators. This goes to show that the Nigerian state still has good people who are committed to the entity called Nigeria. Lest these boys would have walked away freely. It takes a high level of intelligence to nip these cyber criminals turned murderers in our society. The founder of Facebook, Mark Zukerberg, designed this social media while still studying in the university, at his dormitory. Then, some months ago, the young boy went on IPO and raised USD100.04 Billion in 48hrs and counting when he decided to sell the shares of the this company. Is the Nigerian youth different? What is wrong with our youths? others are celebrating success and breakthrough whilst ours are celebrating fraud and yahoo yahoo.

This should serve as a big lesson and eye opener to our young girls who are now bent on either Facebook, BB or nothing. they should be careful how they go about their desire to be recognized and want to socialize, as it has its own very ugly and bad side. As for the criminals and murderers, it is very clear in the Nigerian constitution, under the criminal codes, any pre-meditated murder or manslaughter is either death sentence or life imprisonment with hard labour. This should serve as a big lesson to would be neophyte.

  • The Nigerian Police has a lot to tell the general public about this case. The girl was used for rituals and the police is aware of it, I don't know whose interest they are protecting. The girls body was found in the morgue, with her hands cut off and some parts of her body missing. They should bring out her body for autopsy. How do we believe that the Police got the passport number of a person they don't know from the internet. The police has a lot to answer. For Justice to take its due course. The D.P.O of that police station should be detained, tried and fired. The police men involved in the investigation should be fired. The Owner of the hotel should be arrested and tried as well. And to the family of Cynthia Osokogu, May the Almighty God give you the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. and May Cynthia's soul rest in perfect peace.

  • Education is a fundamental right of all. Age should not be a barrier to learning. Just because some people are misbahaving does not mean that students beyond a certain age bracket are evil-minded. My former lecturer and actor, Dr. Kola Oyewo was in the same class with his son when he studied drama at Obafemi Awolowo University. He graduated with 2:1 and his son graduated with 2:2. He is currently the head of department of theatre art at the Redeemed University. Let us be careful about making wrong and misleading comments. This is not an age issue. This is an unfortunate incident with a warning example to every one not just young girls. Cyber crime has taken many forms and we can't be too careful. Let us be watchful and prayerful and make wide consultations before we make a decision. If Cynthia had told about 5 persons about her business venture, it is possible that one of them will tell her to be careful. I am not blaming her but I wish I was her friend and she had told me. May God console her loved ones.

  • Facebook can be likened to inovations like cars which carry peopls about yet kills, electricity which gives like, and any good things of life which has good and bad. Its is only people that makes the evil in godly men to rise up.
Despite cars killing,we still buy and drive around our cars etc. That is not to say that our young girls and boys should not be carefull using the internets services but the issue is not facebook but the people that have decided to only use the bad side of it.
Facebook has made some people, so lets use it for the good.
On police investigation, they have questions to answer, let the DPO tell us how he got the girls passport from the internet please, lets not sweep this to the background. How did it happen? A girl they told us that every identifiable thing from her was removed by the boys, so how come they got her passport from net, matched it with it and came with their findings
If the DPO has told us they did a DNA test and and came with that conclusion that would have been better.
Police in Nigeria can do anything to prove to Nigerians they are working, let us at this stage look beyond the two arrest for now and ask police to explain these internet mistry.
How i wish this is UK, that DPO will be answering a lot of questions by now.
Once more, may your soul rest in peace Cynthia.

  • The police has shown some level of commitment towards investigating crime, thanks to the nigeria police. My question is, what if she was to be the duaghter of an ordinary civil servant, will the police take these measures they have taken in order to get murderer. Let us be sincere to ourselves, the truth is that because the father was once a military personnel (Major, Gen.) what a high position. This is to show the level of moral decadence in our society. Our youths have left the real path of tradition and culture. Now they have kill her, they is the devil, while the devil is on its own. The family of the deased should heart, may be that is how God panned it.
    MY ADVICE:
The police should mandate them to do all the traditional right and ensure that the MUDERER marry her, there and then charge them for murder with traditional laws not with english laws.

The story behind the phone call and pass port number being traced as to confirm the identity of the deceased just doesnt add up. the first time i read of this story i was totally pissed with that line in particular albeit, also very grieved at the dastard act of the miscreants. Its indeed a very unfortunate occurrence for the deceased and a huge loss to the family.
