Three unions in the Nigerian universities, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) have threatened to embark on a nation-wide strike from January, 2013.

The National President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke who dropped the hint during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Uyo, said the planned strike is to compel the Federal Government to implement Earned Allowances and clear associated arrears to its members across the country.

Ugwoke expressed disappointment at the failure of the Federal government to capture Earned Allowances for non teaching staff in the Nigerian universities in the 2013 budget in spite of various presentations and negotiations with the appropriate authorities.

He said it was not in the character of SSANU to disrupt academic calendar since the university system had experienced series of industrial unrests in the past resulting in the disruption of academic calendar with negative effects on the university system.
The union leader queried why the Federal Government had not made provision for the payment of arrears of Earned Allowances nor the implementation of Earned Allowances in the 2013 Federal budget to Non teaching staff in the Nigerian universities.

SSANU opined that for peace and industrial harmony to reign in the university system in 2013, the Federal Government should urgently make provision for arrears and payment of Earned Allowances to Non teaching staff in the university system.

Comrade Ugwoke appealed to stakeholders in the education system to join forces with SSANU, NASU and NAAT in prevailing upon the Federal Government not to maintain hard posture on matters regarding the welfare of Non-teaching staff in the Nigerian Universities for the prevailing industrial harmony to be sustained.

The SSANU boss lauded the management of the University of Uyo for the cordial relationship existing among all the campus based union and appealed for the tempo to be sustained.
