Ore-Benin Express road
Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has expressed concern over the dilapidated state of Nigerian roads, particularly in the South-East and South-South geo-political Zones.
The union specifically noted the Enugu-Port Harcourt; Enugu-Abakaliki; Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene-Calabar; Port-Harcourt-Warri; Enugu-Otupo-Makurdi-Jos Expressway; Benin-Sagamu; Lagos-Ibadan roads have become death traps, leading to loss of lives and property on regular basis.
It therefore called on the Federal Government to do the needful now that the country is in the threshold of dry season to rehabilitate the roads. It noted that the state of the roads does not in any way reflect the huge amount of money that are alleged to have been spent on the roads by the government.
The union also sympathised with individuals and communities affected by the September, 2012 flooding in the country. The cause of the flood notwithstanding, the union maintained is not enough for government to make pronouncement on relief materials for the affected people and communities. He urged that concerted effort should be made by government to adequately resettle those who lost their houses to the flood and positive steps taken to avert future occurrence.
