Prof. Wole Soyinka

By Sunday Okobi

Miffed by the security challenges in the country, Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Tuesday  warned that the country was heading towards a civil war, blaming political leaders who spread religious intolerance.

While a mosque and Islamic school have been attacked and set ablaze in Benin-City, Edo State yesterday, according to a police source in the state, the Greater Accra Police Command has impounded a truck load of ammunition said to be on its way to Nigeria.

Two people, a Ghanaian and a Nigerian had been arrested, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Rose bio Atinga, confirmed in an interview with Joy News reporter, Annie Osabutey.

Speaking to the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) World Service, Soyinka said he agreed with President Goodluck Jonathan that the current unrest was worse than the 1960s civil war, stressing: “It’s not an unrealistic comparison — it’s certainly based on many similarities. We see the nation heading towards a civil war.”

Asked whether the unrest threatened the state of Nigeria itself, Soyinka replied: “It is going that way.  We  can no longer  pretend it’s not. When you’ve got a situation where a bunch of people can go into a place of worship and open fire through the windows, you’ve reached a certain dismal watershed in the life of that nation.”

Soyinka said the issues raised by Boko Haram, which was blamed for violence targeting Christians in the north of Nigeria and has sparked fears of a wider religious conflict, had been brewing for some time.

“There are people in power in certain parts of the country, leaders who quite genuinely and authoritatively hate and cannot tolerate any religion outside their own,” he said.

“When you combine that with the ambitions of a number of people who believe they are divinely endowed to rule the country and who… believe that their religion is above whatever else binds the entire nation together, and somehow the power appears to slip from their hands, then they resort to the most extreme measures.

“Youths who have been indoctrinated right from infancy can be used, and who have been used, again and again to create mayhem in the country,” he said.

He added “Those who have created this faceless army have lost control of them.”

Meanwhile, the ammunitioninterested  included action guns, double barrel guns and uncountable number of cartridges, Atinga confirmed.  The truck was impounded yesterday in Achimota on its way to Nigeria.  Atinga would not reveal the identities of the suspects, except    thorough investigations have begun. It is not clear why the ammunition was heading to Nigeria and in whose hands they may end up.

Also the Nigerian Red Cross spokesman told the BBC that five people had been killed and six injured in the incident which followed a separate attack on a different mosque in city on Monday.

A leader of the Hausa community in Benin-City told the BBC's Hausa Service that 7,000 northerners were seeking refuge in police and army barracks in the city, and that they were being registered at police stations and army barracks.

Two cars at the centre housing the mosque and Islamic school were also torched, police said.

The attack was the latest in a spiral of sectarian violence that has seen many southerners living in the north flee their homes.

According to BBC's report, the latest violence started in Benin on Monday, when a group attacked a mosque, leaving 10 people injured, and also in Gusau, capital of Zamfara State, youths attacked a church. Police made 19 arrests.

A group of youths tried to attack a Hausa community leader's house but it was defended by Hausa youths and the police then intervened.

  • It's about them time comments like this started appearing as headlines in our media circles. The northern elite are ominously quite as if the killing of Christians is just a way of life, They should be warned that when this fire starts, everybody, shall be consumed.

  • The reason why Dim Ojukwu insisted on the division of Nigeria is now manifesting. Its clear separating the north from other region seems to be the only way out if our "badluck" presido seems to have run out of ideas and wisdom in running this country. Its very obvious he lacks the capabilities of being a president.

  • Nigerians will not be victims of government incompetence. It's a shame that activity of a rag-tag extremists can not be contain by govt even with the huge security votes. Nothing will plunge ordinary and exploited Nigerians into civil war apart from govt inaction and indifference to our security challenge. Where is the police, Army, Airforce, Navy, SSS, DMI, NIA?

  • The security challenge in Nigeria is not about Christians vs Muslims, not about North vs South. No. It is about Hausa people vs other northerners (whether christians, muslims or arnimists) on the one hand, and Hausa people and other Nigerians (whether christians, muslims or arnimists). The Hausas have lost power and Governmental patronage. They have lost grip of the north. And they envious of the economic better offness of other Nigerians north and south. These three things account for their infiltration of boko haram and turning it against Christians....in order to ganner the support of other muslims.....when that fails, they now retort to the killing of Igbos so as to give the whole of the north a bad name. Fellow Nigerians, the security challenge is hatched, sustained and executed by Hausas. They will soon hijack the labour protest in the north and kill other Nigerians. The Hausa man hates no-hausas equally....whether the non-hausa person is gwari, birom, nupe, kanuri, jukun, ibo, idoma, yoruba, or south-south. It was their jealousy of the ibos in the 60s that made them mobilize other northers to help them create a civil war against the ibos.Other northerners (including muslims) are not antagonistic of other Nigerians. The boko haram sympathisers in Govt are th Hausas in Govt. The other northern muslim: the gwari, idoma, fulani, jukun, chamba, kataf, nupe, kanuri etc, etc, etc are usually deceived into believing that the fight is to keep the purity of their religion, not knowing that the hausas are using religion to vent their anger. Fellow Nigerians, the moment we understand this and make them know that we know, once we are able enlighten other northerners about this matter, the boko haram scourge will cease without a gunshot.

  • Have you all forgotten about the prediction that Nigeria will breakup by 2015. This crisis we are facing as a nation is beyond our tribes and religions, not to even talk of subsidy removal. it is a grand design orchestrated by some evil people outside of Nigeria........ please read part of this SECRET COVENANT

We will make them kill each other when it suits us.
We will keep them separated from the oneness by dogma and religion.
We will control all aspects of their lives and tell them what
    to think and how.
We will guide them kindly and gently letting them think they
    are guiding themselves.
We will foment animosity between them through our factions.
When a light shall shine among them, we shall extinguish it by ridicule,
or death, whichever suits us best.
We will make them rip each other’s hearts apart and kill their own children.
We will accomplish this by using hate as our ally, anger as our friend.
The hate will blind them totally, and never shall they see that from
their conflicts we emerge as their rulers. They will be busy killing each other.
They will bathe in their own blood and kill their neighbors for as long
    as we see fit.
We will benefit greatly from this, for they will not see us, for they
    cannot see us.
We will continue to prosper from their wars and their deaths.
We shall repeat this over and over until our ultimate goal is
    accomplished.
We will continue to make them live in fear and anger
    though images and sounds.
We will use all the tools we have to accomplish this.
The tools will be provided by their labor.
We will make them hate themselves and their neighbors.
We will always hide the divine truth from them, that we are all one.
    This they must never know!
They must never know that color is an illusion, they must always
    think they are not equal.
Drop by drop, drop by drop we will advance our goal.
We will take over their land, resources and wealth to exercise total
    control over them.
We will deceive them into accepting laws that will steal the little
    freedom they will have.
We will establish a money system that will imprison them forever,
keeping them and their children in debt.
When they shall ban together, we shall accuse them of crimes and
present a different story to the world for we shall own all the media.
We will use our media to control the flow of information and their
    sentiment in our favor.
When they shall rise up against us we will crush them like insects, for
    they are less than that.
They will be helpless to do anything for they will have no weapons.
We will recruit some of their own to carry out our plans, we will
promise them eternal life, but eternal life they will never have
for they are not of us.
The recruits will be called “initiates” and will be indoctrinated
to believe false rites of passage to higher realms. Members of these
groups will think they are one with us never knowing the truth.
They must never learn this truth for they will turn against us.
For their work they will be rewarded with earthly things and
great titles, but never will they become immortal and join us,
never will they receive the light and travel the stars.
They will never reach the higher realms, for the killing of
their own kind will prevent passage to the realm of enlightenment.
    This they will never know.

  • We have made absolutely no progress together as ONE nation. It is about time we tried a different way - let's break this unwholesome construct called Nigeria and try to make progress separately. It is obviously the case that while some parts want to progress, there are some parts dragging the whole back.

How long does it have to go on?

  • The reality is what Tanko Bantu has said. The best bet is for the non Hausa/Fulani's start dissociating themselves from the nonentities and help educate them because the perception of some southerners is that the moment you are from North and particularly been a muslim, you sympathize with the Boko Harams

  • I still believe we can continue to live side by side if the beings in us is enough humanly and is of GOD or ALLAH then we must tolerate our differences and not allow greed to monopolize the ruler ship and dominate our brothers ,sisters consume us all, for i think together peacefully with respect to our differences be it religion, regional, ethnic, etc we must surely overcome and excel together, we need one another.

  • The most interesting aspect of the unidentified BOKO HARAM is that they have killed more Muslims than Christians with attending loss of property. That Mt. President stated that, the unidentified BOKO HARAM have infiltrated the Government, the FEC, Senate, House of Rep., the Military, Police and SSS, leaves most of us wondering why Mr. President is afraid if naming those involved. Are we to believe the Government is interested in what is happening in order to accelerate the break-up of this country. I am convinced the true Muslims and Christians who lived together that long will never allow this to happen.
Will be interested to know how the country will be divided into Muslims and Christians Republics!

  • Nigeria is not heading towards a civil war. The politicians are inciting the public. WHAT IS WRONG IN REMOVING FUEL SUBSIDIES? Except now, we will developed other avenues of pushing the country forward instead of relying on oil revenue. This will make every sector of the country to developed or find something one area can contribute to a better Nigeria. Nigerian have gotten lazy and uncreative because everything is fuel money.

  • Let us not be in a haste to chant for the break up of Nigeria...the lessons of Biafra should not be in vain. We must thread carefully concerning the current situation in Nigeria. Separation of the north and south still won't bring the peace we all wish...just look at India & Pakistan, Czech, Slovakia, Bosnia etc as a reminder. War is a terrible thing and I pray none of us falls into it.
