Bags of Fertiliser
From Mohammed Aminu in Sokoto
Sokoto State Government is set to procure 296,000 bags of assorted fertilisers from the Federal Government for the 2012 farming season.
Speaking in Sokoto, State Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Jabbi Kilgori, said the fertiliser would be bought under the newly introduced electronically enabled e-wallet voucher system using GSM.
He explained that this would comprise 148,000 bags each of NPK and Urea brands of fertiliser. According to him, each bag of the commodity would be procured at N5,500 while both the federal and Sokoto state governments would provide a 25 per cent subsidy.
Kilgori maintained that only private fertiliser companies and agro dealers would be used in transporting the products to the 23 local government councils. The commissioner stressed that only genuine farmers would get the commodity.
He disclosed that the state government has concluded plans to purchase 10,000 bags of assorted grains worth N100 million for onward sale to workers and the general public.
Kilgori pointed out that the grains would be sold on a subsidy of 30 per cent per bag. "The initiative is aimed at assisting the people of the state to alleviate their suffering,” he said, and added that the commodities include maize, millet and sorghum, among others.
