The recent Sokoto Merit Awards ceremony gave the people the opportunity to roll out the drums to celebrate outstanding individuals who had brought honour to the state through their activities in their various fields of human endeavour. The Merit Award was a gesture of honour by the Sokoto State Government to worthy individuals whose accomplishment have brought fame and respect not only to the state but to the country as a whole.

Over the years, successive administrations genuinely felt that the exemplary conduct, performance and achievements of outstanding individuals from the state must not go unrecognised and unappreciated. That was in a bid for the young generation to be inspired and hope for a rewarding future. It was also designed to help them follow in the footsteps of these role models and rekindle self-confidence in their aspiration for greatness.

The state government thus organise the award ceremony with a view to boosting the morale of the people, strengthen their self-confidence as well as re-awaken their commitment and determination for greater achievements, which will consequently help in making a remarkable difference in the lives of the people.

Thus, the essence of the ceremony was meant to serve as an impetus to galvanise people at all levels to render selfless service, strive for excellence in their callings and uphold the virtues of good character and civic duty. This was meant to encourage the youth to appreciate and explore their inherent talents and qualities so that they could one day be honoured as well.

Indeed, Sokoto State government made a good choice to inspire the youth.  The state selected the Speaker of the House of Representative, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and a car designer from the United States who is an indigene of the state, Mr. Jelani Aliyu.  For Aliyu, it was an honour well deserved.  His remarkable accomplishments and creativity have reverberated worldwide in the highly competitive and technologically advanced field of automobile design. In fact, Aliyu’s expertise in this highly demanding field of technical intelligence and skill took him far beyond Nigeria and earned him exclusive accolades in the world’s leading automobile company, General Motors in Detroit , United States of America, for the design of the award winning car Chevrolet Volt.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, extolled the virtues of the Speaker and described him as an illustrious son of the caliphate that impressively lived up to the expectations of not only his colleagues but indeed fellow Nigerians. According to him, Tambuwal had exhibited calm and responsible leadership require at the House of Representatives in a manner that strengthened the current democratic dispensation and deepened the relationship between the three arms of government.

He said: “This award ceremony is a testimony of our commitment in upholding progressive leadership traits and it is noteworthy that Tambuwal won the broad based acceptance of the members of the House in recognition of personal traits and professional pedigree. He is straight forward, humble, tolerant, progressive and a team player. I must say without equivocation that we are deeply proud of this public officer particularly for being a worthy ambassador of the culture and traditions that defined the enduring legacies of the seat of the caliphate in the evolution of the nation.

“We are also proud that the sterling leadership qualities nurtured by his unique upbringing has proven to be indispensable to the much desired peace and unity in the country. On our part, we will continue to encourage him to strive to do more by dedicating himself to the more onerous demands of national service, in the knowledge that the benefits are for all Nigerians.”

He emphasised that the state government selected five outstanding individuals for the award this year, adding that the gesture was meant to galvanise people at all levels to render selfless service and strive for excellence.

“It is not one’s age that matters but one’s accomplishments. Therefore, we must continue to explore how best we can make our children’s tomorrow better than our today.  “This can only be achieved, if we remain committed to the ideals of the founding fathers of the nation,” Wamakko added.

In his remark, the Head of Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bello Sali, congratulated the awardees for their selfless service to the people and urged them to sustain the tempo by living an exemplary life.  He noted that the award would serve as a catalyst to encourage hard work and spur them to do more, adding that it will also serve as an incentive for members of the society to strive for such lofty heights.

Also speaking, the Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Samson Jaja reminded the awardees that the award was a challenge to them not to rest on their oars but to redouble efforts to bequeath a lasting legacy to the nation.  He described the award bestowed on the five outstanding individuals from the state as inspirational and lauded the governor for appreciating their service to humanity.

The Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, who spoke on behalf of the awardees, thanked the state government for the gesture and pledged to do more to bring change to the lives of the people. He stressed the need for Nigerians not to dwell on the challenges ahead and the way their leaders got it wrong but resolve to give their best for the development of the nation.

He challenged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of discipline and hard work by rendering selfless service to their communities. “We must learn to render selfless service to our people. We must begin to work hard to change the role models of our children from people who acquire wealth through dubious means to people who bring joy to their fellow human beings. The most successful people are not the richest but people who through their activities left this life better than they met it,” Tambuwal said.
