Farouk Lawan
I have watched with consternation the plot of Act 2 Scene 1 of the Farouk-Otedola drama series. After admitting that he collected bribe from Femi Otedola, the owner of Zenon Oil, Hon Farouk Lawan is engaging in another scene in a general drams of sleaze. And I don’t understand him anymore. Yes, he had claimed he collected the said bribe ($500,000) while Boniface Emenalo collected $100,000. And that after he received it all, he wrote a letter, “attached” the money and sent same to Hon Adams Jagaba, the chairman of the House committee on Narcotics and Financial crimes. But pray, how did Farouk “attach” the whopping sum of $600,000 or 620,000 to a letter? What kind of attachment is that? The essence of depositing it with Jagaba, Lawan explained, is to preserve it as evidence of bribe from Otedola.
Well, a lot of issues have arisen from why Farouk chose to send the money to Jagaba and not the Police or EFCC? But worse still is on the time lapse between when the bribe was taken and when it was allegedly sent to Jagaba. But if all that is not worrisome enough, the fact that Jagaba has formally written the Police to deny ever seeing or receiving any such bribe money from Lawan is now the subject of investigation by the Police.
So did Lawan actually give the money to Jagaba? If the intent was to conduct his own brand of sting operation on Otedola, why did Lawan drive to Otedola’s house at such an ungodly hour, all alone? Why did he not use his driver?
Now last week, Lawan was reported to have admitted having the bribe money and promised to hand it over to the Police by last weekend to avoid the excessive pressure being piled on him. Now this week, the story has once again changed. Farouk now insists he handed over the money to Jagaba. Did he obtain any note or written acknowledgement of the sum from Jagaba? The latter is avoiding the police like a plague, insisting he got nothing from Lawan. So are they saying the money is missing or is it another magic?
Hon Farouk should save whatever is left of his vitiating reputation and end this needless drama fast. The onus is on him to provide the bribe money he collected. Or is he having difficulty producing the money because the very wads of marked dollar he received have been shared and spent by the House cabal? Somebody should please save us from this jerky joke of Lawan.
