Football action at the Bankers' Games

Skye Bank Plc has won the gold medal of the 2012 ‘Bankers’ Games football league by thrashing Standard Chartered Bank Limited 2-1 at the final played in Lagos on Sunday.

Skye Bank Football team which is also the defending champion, having won the competition last year, opened its goal account in the 20th minute of the first half when Sanni Ishmael converted from the spot kick following a Stan-chartered defender’s hand ball error.

After the goal, the defending champions began to dominate the game and could have scored more goals but for Stan- Chartered’s goal keeper who made some superb saves.

Towards the end of the first half, however, Standard Chartered equalised when their attacker slotted home from a long pass towards the end of the penalty box.

The second half began with both sides being cautious to avoid making mistakes. However, a through ball in the Stan-chart area left Skye Bank’s Abdulrasheed Mustapha face-to-face with the goal keeper but he was brought down by the goal keeper. Ishmael stepped forward again to send the goal keeper to the wrong side for the winning goal.

The victory confirmed Skye Bank’s place in the history of the games as one of the few teams to have won the championship back-to-back.

Commenting on the victory, Skye Bank Plc’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kehinde Durosinmi-Etti, attributed it to hard work, teamwork and zeal which he said were essential ingredients of success.

He also commended other medallists in athletics, chess, draught, and table tennis.

According to him, the result showed that victory would come when the team set its mind on certain goals. The bank’s chief also congratulated the players and the officials on their success as well as for doing the banking proud.
