WAP TV BERTHS ON STARTIMES

Wale Adenuga Productions, the flagship of family entertainment with a wide range of epoch-making family dramas like Papa Ajasco, Binta My Daughter, Super Story, This Life, Odd World and Nnena and Friends is making an enchanting addition to its portfolio with the berth of a TV channel, WAPTV on StartTimes. The channel was launched on October 1st with a vision to revolutionize the viewing habits of the Nigerian family. The 24-hour channel is designed fully to accommodate mainly entertainment programmes. The chairman, Wale Adenuga (MFR) and his management team are blazing a trail as the first Nigerian Channel that will be producers of fifty percent of its content while giving a window platform to other independent producers to air their materials.

To be expected are seasoned presenters like Oluwalambe Folasade, Mofe Duncan, Effiong Veronica among a long list of other highly skilled professionals. The programmes on WAPTV are a mélange of old and fresh takes, but the channel has its exclusive programmes different from the ones accessible via terrestrial platforms. From Kookoorookoo, a morning show designed with the Nigerian Family in mind which promises not to be a run-off-the-mill but a fusion of various entertainment elements sandwiched to meet the needs of everyone in the society to early morning sassy and fun aerobics orchestrated to keep all the members of the family fit, the theme for a fun-filled day is set.
Programmes like Oro Agba, Aerobics, Guest Visits, Omo Nla, Entertainment News, Music, Motivational Talks, Reel Naija, Awokogbon and so on are all so fabricated that they bear a considerable amount of entertainment in each of them. It avails viewers a second chance to see some of the episodes they missed in their favourite dramas from Wale Adenuga Productions as much as it evokes some nostalgic feeling to see some classics carrying timeless lessons.

As to why the head honcho, Wale Adenuga embraced StarTimes instead of other platforms, the ace producer explained; “StarTimes has the largest platform across Africa and it also explains why NTA pitched its tenth with them. Other platforms are not generous enough to accommodate us with the vast materials we’re bringing in especially since they also have so much at hand”.

StarTimes launched in Nigeria in 2010 coverage in key cities like Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port-Harcourt, Ibadan, Benin, Onitsha and Asaba making Nigerians have the opportunity to digital pay-tv at very affordable cost, mobility, fabulous local and global contents and without requiring dish nor installation. These are the cutting edge WAPTV is keying into. And the StarTimes Mobile TV initiative is the newest product in the StarTimes family which allows viewers to watch their favourite programmes on mobile phones and via GPS. So, WAPTV on the go via StarTimes Mobile TV is also a new dimension in the Nigerian viewing culture.

WAPTV’s journey began many years ago from the creation of Ikebe Super Magazine which sprang up others like Super Story,   Binta and Friends, Papa Ajasco on celluloid in 1983.

Grand Hotel, Asaba, Delta state was agog last weekend when a score of pretty plus size ladies locked horns on the runway. And the trophy in contention was the crown for Miss Plus Size Beauty Pageant initiated by Victoria Iheakonye, the C.E.O. of Vichiano Service Limited. The pageant started with two thousand entries of women who would like to cart away the grand prize, but only eighteen made it to the finals. Headed by Qristyl Frazier, a notable face on the Black Entertainment Television (BET) and RIP, a popular pageant in USA, the jury also had Aquilah Njamah and Nicole Esperenza Zepeda from the United States. A good number of the contestants are quite familiar with how to strut the runway but choreographer of repute, Angel Vivian drilled the ladies to get them to deliver their best. And after deliberations by the judges, Onyeka Nwanne was crowned the winner. Onyeka is a final year undergraduate of Madonna University. She walked home with a brand new Toyota Car while the first and second runners-up got N1million and N500,000 respectively.  The three finalists automatically became ambassador of Plus Size Women’s Health Foundation. Musician and rapper Barnabas Buba Luka also known as Classiq is the first artiste to debut from the label and in grand style too with the X-club bound up-tempo single dubbed ‘ Sama’.
The single which was produced by Finesse’ in-house ace producer, SuperSoniq is set to rule the airwaves and clubs with its irresistible fusion of Classiq’s unique northern tones, a distinct Afro-pop and techno beat. Sama means ‘Up’ in Hausa language. Classiq explained, “It is not just a song, it is a movement asking people to move up, whether you are at the office, in the club, or in school, wherever you are, move up”.  Lines from the chorus; ‘In baki zo ba a barki a baya’ literally means if you don’t come with us, you’ll be left behind. Classiq is one of the wave making northern born musicians proudly carrying the Hausa lyrics and style in their music. He joined the select few like Ice Prince in headlining the wave-making ‘Hausa Boy’ with what is today known as ‘Aboki Swag’. Born in Bauchi and raised in Kano, 21 year old Classiq is a graduate of Computer Science from the Bayero University in Kano. He moved to Lagos in 2011 to join the trend-setting Finesse Entertainment label which was incidentally launched the same year.

Flavour n’abania

Highlife whiz, Chinedum Izuchukwu Okoli with the stage name Flavour N’abania has shot an entrancing video of his single, ‘Baby Oku’. And this may not be news enough as the fact that he’s upped the ante by taking a trip off to the coastline of Miami to do the shoot which lasted for a couple of days. The spellbinding video was idealized by Enter-10-Ment and directed by Antwan Smith. The video excites with a slow high-life beginning with some banging percussion to climax the song which will soon rock the man clubs. We gathered that the talented act is preparing this song for his forthcoming album titled, Blessed.

Tiwa savage

‘IFE WA GBONA’ featuring Leo Wonder is Tiwa Savage, Marvin Record’s first and only lady’s video and it’s by no means a disappointing outing. Directed by Bolaji Kekere-Ekun of the 37th Estate, the video shot in Epe, a Lagos suburb is a tuneful fusion of African culture, humour and romance which makes the hearts of her fans and other music buffs flutter. The project is a collaboration between 323 Entertainment and Mavin Records.

Kunle afolayan

Insinuations are rife in the industry that multiple award winning filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan has been renounced as Globacom ambassador.  There are speculations that the movie maker par excellence had been on annual fee of N5 million from August, 2011 about the same time Yoruba actor, Odunlade Adekola was brought on board a deal with the telecom company. It was alleged that Afolayan had requested increment of his annual fee which the chairman of the company, Otunba Mike Adenuga is averse to and ordered that his deal be terminated. Meanwhile in a telephone conversation with Afolayan, he denied the incidence while insisting that we get the true story from officials of Glo. But as at press time, ShowBizFlair could not reach the officials of the telecom company to confirm the veracity of the story or otherwise.
