The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate in the April 2011 general election and former governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Thursday hinted that the merger talks between his party and other opposition political parties would be consummated between the next two or three months.

‘’We are still talking and in the next two, three months the merger is going to be a reality even before the 2015 elections, we are sure of making it,” he said.

Shekarau who spoke with journalists in Ibadan, venue of the South-west ANPP National Rebuild Forum, stressed that the new political party is to come up with a new identity, new logo and new flag immediately after the merger talks.

According to him, the merger talks between the opposition political parties is at 50 per cent conclusion stage as all the political parties involved have agreed to fuse together for the progress of the nation’s growing democracy.

Shekarau pointed out that the merger talks between the ANPP, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) was as a result of the yearnings of Nigerians for a better alternative to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“We are moving ahead, we are making progress with the merger talk. We are ready to chart a new course that will be large enough to give us the alternative change in the country.

“Nigerians are looking at us for a better alternative and we are ready to provide it,’’ he said.

The ANPP chieftain maintained that Nigerians should any moment from now be expecting “positive result from the ongoing merger talks between the three political parties”, saying, “this time around, we are determined to salvage our people.”

According to the former governor Nigerians should be expecting positive result from our merger talks, we are determined. In the past, the country has never witnessed any serious merger talks, but this time around, we shall come out with positive result.’’

On whether the merger talks would be a reality before the 2015 general election, Shekarau said there is no going back on the merger talks which according to him, is coming to reality any moment from now.

Speaking further, he disclosed that other opposition political parties apart from the ANPP are also showing interest in the merger towards ensuring that PDP is sent packing come 2015 general election considering the fact that Nigerians are tired of the administration.

Addressing the South-west ANPP leaders, Shekarau said his coming to Ibadan was part of the moves by the ANPP leaders at carrying all members of the party along with the merger talks and the re-branding of the party.

According to him, the decisions of all ANPP members across the six geo-political zones in the country would surely be part of what would determine the position of ANPP in the merger talks, saying, “for now, we are yet to reach the final agreement on the merger talk.”
