Attempts to redress historic grievances in Nigeria’s oil-rich south may inadvertently have helped create the conditions for the Islamic insurgency spreading from the impoverished north-east of the country, so says Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

A revenue sharing formula that gave 13 percent derivation to the oil-producing states was introduced after the military relinquished power in 1999 among a series of measures aimed at redressing historic grievances among those living closest to the oil and quelling a conflict that was jeopardising output.

But Sanusi who spoke in an interview with the Financial Times Friday said: "There is clearly a direct link between the very uneven nature of distribution of resources and the rising level of violence."

He said that it was now necessary to focus funds on regenerating other regions if Nigeria wants to secure long-term stability.

"When you look at the figures and look at the size of the population in the north, you can see that there is a structural imbalance of enormous proportions. Those states simply do not have enough money to meet basic needs while some states have too much money.

"The imbalance is so stark because the state still depends on oil for more than 80 per cent of its revenues," said Sanusi.

The FT, in a further analysis of the issue yesterday, wrote: "Nigeria has made little headway raising taxes for example from agriculture, which accounts for 42 per cent of GDP. Northern Nigeria’s economy has traditionally depended on the government more than the south. Many of the industries set up as part of earlier efforts to promote national balance have gone bust or been sold off during a decade of liberal market reforms, power shortages and infrastructure collapse.

"According to official figures, the leading oil producing state, Rivers, received N1,053 billion between 1999 and 2008 in federal allocations. By contrast the North-eastern states of Yobe and Borno, where the Boko Haram sect was created, received N175bn and N213bn respectively. Broken down on a per capita basis, the contrast is even starker. In 2008 the 18.97m people who lived in the six states in the north-east received on average N1,156 per person.

"By contrast Rivers state was allocated N3,965 per capita, and on average the oil producing South- South region received on average N3,332 per capita. This imbalance is compounded when the cost of an amnesty programme for militants in the delta is included together with an additional 1 per cent for a special development body for the Niger Delta. To boot, the theft of oil by profiteers in the region diverts tens of millions more weekly from federal coffers."

In the past year, the extremist Boko Haram sect has been responsible for proliferating attacks on churches, police stations and other state targets. Just last week, it claimed responsibility for multiple bomb blasts that claimed nearly 200 lives in Kano. The size and sophistication of the attacks underlined fears that the conflict is spiralling out of control.

Meanwhile, Vice President, Namadi Sambo has rallied the 19 Northern state governors together in a bid to check the spate of bombings in the North by the violent Islamic sect Boko Haram and arrive at a collective action against the menace.

Sambo told State House Correspondents that there was no religious problem in the country but terrorist attacks for which all Nigerians must cooperate with security agencies to see to the end of Boko Haram. The vice-president said he has secured the pledge of the governors to cooperate with the federal government to weed out the group.

Sambo’s meeting with the governors held at his Akinola Aguda House residence began around 8.30pm on Thursday and lasted till 2.10 am Friday.

The vice-president confirmed to journalists that he met with the governors on how combat the Boko Haram menace.

He said: "It is a meeting with the 19 governors of the Northern states of the federation and the ministers of Police and Defence and the representative of the National Security Adviser. We have discussed the need for cooperation in the security of this country and particularly, the Northern states. And in this meeting, it is very clear that there is no religious problem, religious fighting in northern Nigeria.

"There is a threat of terrorists and the need to address this terrorism act. Nigeria is one country and we will do everything to ensure that we have peace in the North and in the country in general. All the state governments as usual will further cooperate with the federal government in ensuring that the safety of lives and properties is maintained in all parts of the country."

  • Linking Boko Haram's insurgency to derivation is an oxymoron. It is not at all surprising that this is all Sanusi can offer as an explanation of the rise of the Boko Haram. So what is the reason for the rise of Islamic insurgency every other place in the world and the continued plots to attack Western interests in the US, Europe and in many Maghreb nations in Africa? It is reasoning like this that makes some think the elite in the north know more than they are revealing.

  • What do you mean now? Your statement has a lot of meaning: that is, you sponsored them so that Federal government will give more money to Northern state? or are you saying that the oil producing state should not benefit from the resources? I think if i'm not making mistake, you are calling for the division of the country in which i agree with you. However, if we still have one Nigeria according to Northern leaders, then you should please step down because you are encouraging this boys to go ahead and kill people.

He did not make reference to the losses from pollutions, accidents and other hazards that ought to be compensated for as they arise from the oil production. The issue of Boko Haram was raise by US intelligence since Abacha regime. The warning was that 'a parallel military was being formed in the North-East part of Nigeria'. It will be wrong to attribute it to unfair and iniquity share of the oil revenue. Is it the only Northern States that don�t partake equally from the oil revenue? Why are states like Kebbi, Katsina and Sokoto not involved in this jihad? Why are foreigners from Niger Republic and Chad involved?

  • Back in the 1980"s, there was Matsasine uprising from Kano, Lamido Sanusi's home state, that led to the gruesome murder of several southerners. Back then, there was no 13% derivation, and the powers that be enjoyed living off the resources of the Niger-Delta and pretending to be Oil Sheiks in their flowing babarigas while giving nothing back to the oil-producing states, not even to ameliorate the adverse environmental impact of oil exploration on the Niger-Delta states. To what does Lamido Sanusi attribute the rise of Maitatsine, another extremist Islamic sect with murderous intent, at a time when there was no derivation? Lamido should be advised to look for the answers within rather than fishing in troubled waters. The Boko Haram members we see, with their hate of western education, are preaching for the islamization of Nigeria and the adoption of sharia nationwide.That is their publicly-declared objective until Lamido Sanusi becomes their Spiritual Leader/Guide and Nigeria lurches into yet another crisis that may be terminal.

  • In the Dailytrust Annual Dinner chat in which IBB was the Chairman a speaker from the North said oil is a curse and that the north have big land that will take care of their people. These people speaks with both side of their mouth. The north needs the oil money than any other region according to the CBN man.
    They have more filling station than other region and live and breath with oil. if you cut it off they cant survive for a year. Maitama yusuf said it to the students of ATBU in 1990 that they should never allow the south to break away from the north because the north depends on oil money. if you allow them then you are finished.
    The brother to CBN governor was also invited by Atiku in 2005 to start a radio programme which brought about this hatred for southern people by Northerner separating us, he gave them history of Cameroon on how the southern Cameroon came to power and how the northern Cameroon became impoverish I tell you that is what CBN governor is trying to say .
    The Northern elites are the problem of this country, they brain wash their illiterates people with propaganda eg Sanusi, IBB, Atiku, Buhari etc

A governor that should focus on how to create wealth in country is busy calculating per capita of states that are not 1 dollar per day per person for any state in Nigeria.     Sanusi's comment is most shameful and dumb and I will like him to answer the following questions:

    1. What is 'stark' in N3,965 and N1,156 compare with the environmental degradation being visited on the owner of the resources. Or the difficult terrain that makes construction of 1km of road in Rivers State three times more expensive than it is In Borno and Yobe States?

    2. If Oil were to be coming from the North would there have been Nigeria?

    3. Is monthly allocation the only way by which states are supposed to be generating resources to cater to the need of their people?

    4. Is the allocation received over years not enough for the lazy Northerners to develop their agricultural potentials?

    5. Is he suggesting that 13% derivation is too much?

    6. Is this assertion the outcome of his personal dialogue with Boko Haram?

    7. Is derivation responsible for the Almajiri phenomenon that denies Northern children the right to education and self-empowerment thus festering ignorance and making them a willing tool for violence?

    8. Was derivation responsible for the acts of violence visited on southerners over the years including killings as a result of Palestinian/Israeli dispute which predates derivation?

    Sanusi's thinking is in opposition to that of the government he is serving, he should be eased out as soon as possible.

In difficult times like this (when Boko-Hara remain elusive and the carnage goes on), all kinds of idea (even stupid ideas) are needed as input for further analysis as a way to finding final solution to the insecurity problem in the country.
    It is a fact that Boko-haram emerged from North-East Nigeria, which is the most impoverished geo-political zone in Nigeria. A vital question begging for immediate answer is "why is the zone worst-off poverty wise?" For a long time, gov't has kept quite on this matter. Now that Sanusi has provided a possible reason for the high incidence of poverty in the zone and which could have been responsible for the birth of Boko-haram is commendable.
    Other reasons why the zone remain seriously impoverished is the terrain and high level of corruption in the government circle. The area is a semi-desert area with temperature of 42C in the summer and 20c in the winter. The annual rainfall last between 4 to 5 months. Consequently, farming is not very viable. Gov't support in terms of irrigation projects and fertilizer distribution is not readily available. In fact, the situation on ground is so bad because most villages in the zone are not accessible at all. So, I want to correct the impression that the people of north-eastern Nigeria are lazy. It is just that the situation is not encouraging at all.
    Making the situation worse is the blatant corruption lading to lack of infrastructure and business enablers in the region.
    Long live Nigeria.

  • When push comes to shove it is no longer a joke. CBN Governor is well known for his frank talks which irks even his fellow northerners. Lord Lugard never envisaged Confederacy when he amalgamated what is now Nigeria in 1914. The intention was a true Federal state which is the only form of government that will ensure the survival of the big or small groups in wealth and prosperity. It must be stated loud and clear that it was the intention of the Wilkins commission that the Niger which has peculiar challenges must be specially taken of due to the wealth they produce. The successive government dominated by Northerners destroyed everything the colonial master left including introducing Quota system. In the British colonial Nigeria when Groundnut and Cocoa held sway derivation was 100%. What has changed that the North and West can no longer sustain an agricultural base that will earn reasonable revenue so that the Noeth Eastern States can earn as much as The Niger Delta states? The answer is simple-foreign participation. On my life I can safely say that if foreigners begin to participate again in agriculture the North as a whole earnings will surpass the Niger Delta's. Put in another way if foreign participation in the Oil & Gas Industry were to seize today the earnings of the Niger Delta will plummet.Does it mean we as Nigerians are not capable of doing anything for ourselves in the right way? No; rather I lay it squarely at the door step of a unfortunate merger which set the different groups at each other throat instead of Cooperating to build strong institutions for the good of all. This is where the call for a sovereign National conference can not be faulted. After all the BOKO HARAM scourge has now bee confirmed to have evolved from ECOMOG which was used to win election in the present 4th Republic and now abandoned. Is it unfair Revenue allocation that lead to that? Why are our elites like Sanussi fond of speaking from two sides of their mouth on fundamental issues? Where I come from in Abonnema of Kalabari of Izon in the Niger Delta it is called HYPOCRISY. My marternal extraction is Igbo, I did primary School in the West and Secondary education at FGC Kano. We are all witness to OBJ spirited efforts to sell off Federal Govt. Colleges; a unitary institution to break down the ethnic barriers.   • Fellow Nigerians! I believe we have come so far on wobbly legs that we need to reappraise how Nigeria is run and what it means to be a Nigerian. These two questions are fundamental to creating a future for us and our children and this is my take.

    I believe in a united, just, peaceful and equitable Nigeria and there must be fairness in how we distribute resources as a state policy, such that the strong will support the weak. In this case, the south must lend a strong arm of brotherhood to the north so that they can begin to lift themselves from the level of poverty and ignorance that pervades there.

    Yes, I know a few will call for my head but please lets look into the future learning that power having been held significantly by the northern elites did not benefit the majority from that region. There should be a state policy that is devoid of the shameless lie that the rulers in the last 50 years have told us.

    To achieve this, all must come to the table as equals to discuss the vision for Nigeria. Once we can agree that Nigeria remains, then we can begin reorganizing by fashioning a new constitution, flag and anthem to reflect our mutual future.

    SLS means well but I think he should have put his proposal forward as a solution to helping us resolve our present challenges. God bless Nigeria!

We know our enemies are our Governors and local officials, for making us beggars despite huge agricultural resources and human capital. The years of misrule and corruption by OUR leaders have brought us to this point, not Resource control, or the South. The Govt of Borno State under SAS is directly responsible for Boko Haram.

    There are many of us from the hated Hausa Fulani who hate the present state of affairs, hate the hand outs in form of allocations. The Native Authority in the 1st republic was able to provide basic services like roads, schools and health care from taxes and agriculture. Then they still contributed income to the Federal purse. Now State Govts cant do nothing but run to Abuja for handouts. The same people that were educated by Sardauna are denying same to the masses.   • Sanusi is standing logic on its head. While I do agree there is so much imbalance in the federal allocations in between states in the South and those in the north, what one can't deny is the fact while there is social progression in the south in terms of investment in education of both males and females, greater independence on the ability of individual citizens to develop relevant skills, the Northern elites deny their people the same sort of opportunities while encouraging unsustainable population explosion without looking at the available resources. Given the peculiar situations of the northern states especially in the light of the fact they have been in control of power at the centre for the greater number of years since independence, that region should be better off in terms of having the right sort of programmes that improve education, healthcare, housing, transportation, and less of Islam. But instead, the northern elites in the typical feudal mentality chose to pre-occupy the minds of their people with all the toxic aspects of religion. In the midst of widespread poverty and illiteracy, the backwardness of the north should be expected. The northern elites are to be blamed for the situation as they have been pre-occupied with gaining and controlling resources at the centre which ultimately end in the pockets of a minority northern elites, emirs and religious leaders while the rest of the region drown in poverty and ignorance.
    I hope the current government might learn some lessons in this situation (if ever at all they would ever take notice) and come up with practical plans to invest Nigeria's enormous resources on its citizens both in the north and south. Building roads and bridges and new shiny hospitals are a great way to start but the best possible investment is affordable quality education. If people are educated and are capable of independent reasoning, half the problem of Nigeria will be solved. The government needs to look at the population of both the north and south, and identify the least developed parts of the country and come up with the right polices to accelerate development, and discourage unsustainable way of life. It is obvious, irrespective of religious or cultural attachments that many families in the north and south cannot afford more than 2 children per household, the government needs to take a cue from other places in the world and try to apply the right measures to this situations.

But as I analyze his action as CBN Governor like trying to create Islamic Banking in Nigeria and then this statement, I keep wondering why the President has not ordered secret investigation on this man. If a every Nigerian decides to kill another Nigerian just because he perceived to be mistreated, I don't think Lamido will still be governor of Central Bank of Nigeria.     A revenue sharing formula that gave 13 percent derivation to the oil-producing states was introduced after the military relinquished power in 1999 among a series of measures aimed at redressing historic grievances among those living closest to the oil and quelling a conflict that was jeopardising output.

    But Sanusi who spoke in an interview with the Financial Times Friday said: "There is clearly a direct link between the very uneven nature of distribution of resources and the rising level of violence."
    He said that it was now necessary to focus funds on regenerating other regions if Nigeria wants to secure long-term stability.

    "When you look at the figures and look at the size of the population in the north, you can see that there is a structural imbalance of enormous proportions. Those states simply do not have enough money to meet basic needs while some states have too much money.

    "The imbalance is so stark because the state still depends on oil for more than 80 per cent of its revenues," said Sanusi.]

    Clearly I want to disagree with Sanusi’s observation - it is not all truth! This is the problem in Nigeria - you asked for solutions to the problems in that country somebody volunteered compatible solutions as early as 1988 and up to 2008 yet you could not decipher or comprehend what the contents were and we are left now at almost finger pointing - at cross road as it were! The CBN Governor forgets rather intuitively the Recommendations of Sir Wilinkson’s before our Independence and how that Report and recommendations could have helped us in Nigeria if we had the right kind of leadership for Nigeria particularly after the civil War! Whilst it is partly true that you needed Revenue allocation revision as we progressed, which again I raised in my submissions, the fact that Nigeria has no system of checking subventions rather they introduced immunity for CEOs in the Constitution such that even the much sub-vented (handed out) is not taken account of because there is no effective means to do so - observers think it is a deliberate policy to look away from what is happening with the funds! The problem therefore is not much about the DELTA issue but more about how the leadership and the politics is geared - the gearing of what we need to be doing in Nigeria really, folks! I regard his observation more of a wishy-washy statement often raised in situation like this to divert or conceal important facts about what is responsible for the problems we have in Nigeria!

    I cannot write much on this paper but to say that there is a lot about this topic that meets the eyes and not what the Governor has tried to put across in this features! I have said it and may I repeat it here that the solutions for us in Nigeria was handed in long time ago but for the thinking of those in authority! The leadership is lamentably deficient and they have not sat down to think out proper ways to get at the roots of our socio, economic and political problems and until they are ready or prepared to do this, we may have to continue with dealing with one such problems after the other - as and when the ‘redoubtables’ find it conducive to come to the fore with their own complaints! I have also told them that nature has a way of planting in societies gifted persons - these may not be PhD holders but they are in with you in societies to help from that clairvoyance aspects of nature! Scientist do dream dreams and from that experience, they try to put what appeared to them in such dreams to practical use sometimes by trial and error and they do succeed! Some lay persons have such dreams and they approach those with PhD to work out what such visions are all about - this how you solve certain problems without necessarily being that educated in your towns and villages, folks!

    I have reduced to this level so as to help you in this discussion that it is not only those with big proficiencies that have solutions to problems hence I talked about keeping you administrative doors wide open and not ajar so as to admit those with solutions and not friends who may not have such ideas to solve your problems, folks! I must stop here and say, No; I disagree with Sanusi’s observations! If they had tried what I handed-in to them in March and September 2008, we shall not be in this position today! To put it mildly, his abservation should be tabled for academic discourse, folks! Thank you.

    I am not commenting on any statement but will like to raise the issue of how deep Nigeria stand divided. We do not see ourselves as one country but a tribalised nation. What a shame. I have recently stopped discussing with some friends on Nigeria issues as their idea of one Nigeria is so shameful and unfounded. I see every Nigeria as one and when trouble arise, we should treat it as a collective issue rather than a tribal issue. The problem has gone far and deep rooted that if we do not start checking it now, the future generations will not forgive us for the damage we are doing to our nation.

    There are very strong opportunities and national development if we can imbibe the spirit of brotherliness, love and oneness in Nigeria. However, we have allowed greed, politics and hatred to cause us so much pain which ordinarily we should not feel. We have allowed these vices to cloud our eyes and thus allow some few in the society taking advantage and brainwashing us for their own benefits.

    The question I want every person reading this is who are the people benefiting from our woes and hatred for ourselves? They are non other than the well off in the society and we are left to suffer for the hatred we are causing within our nation.

    May the spirit of our heroes who fought for one Nigeria see us through this difficult period.

  • This is the most stupid comment i have heard from a central bank governor.The north has never hidden its greed and desire to steal wealth from other regions of the country.Maitasine and the Yola sunni islamic sect of the 1980s killed innocent people just like Boko Haram.This happened under a northern President Shehu Shagari and there was NO 13% DERIVATION!!!   • The point made here by Sanusi is that wealth is not evenly distributed in the country. Country where some states undertake factually all projects will always leads to some few to take edge among others. Unlike south-ssouth or South-west where there a lots of private businesses. Government should invest in other states to develop there natural resources and boost agricultural ethic in the country so that we diffuse concentraion on generating income only from oil. America for example have oil and there income is not sole on this. There should also be a mecanism for states to generate income rather than depending on allocation from the government. But this is not an excuse for Boko Harm to exist in the first place, government need to do something on this, instead of lay back in taking action when it due.

A person of true integrity will speak the truth even when it pains, even when the fingers point at oneself, as it should. Blaming revenue derivation for the murder and mayhem completely delegitimizes you in the eyes of others. You are supposed to represent Nigeria as a technocrat. If you chose to become a biased politician, the president should replace you with someone else that will advocate for the whole country, not for one region. I am a Northerner and I want nothing but the best for the North, that includes means telling the truth even when it hurts. Let us stop the cycle of blame, for that’s the only way the country can progress. Boko Haram is a terrorist organization, simple and pure. Seems like you lack the courage to lay blame where blame should lay - squarely on the shoulders of Boko Haram, thieving and looking governors and others that have systematically looted the North and the country.

  • By Sanusi statement, the hand writing on the wall is very clear. Nigeria will stop to exist soon. Igbos should not as follows
    1. Investment Pattern - The need to invest at home or in safe places irrespective of where they stay. Part of what is attracting envy to the Igbos is that in the same hausa land, that the hausa man does not know what to do, Igbos still come there and make money as evidenced in the kind of cars they ride, houses the build and hotels that they own. Igbo should learn from history. Your father’s enemy can never be your friend! So to me, it is careless and unwarranted for an Igbo man to build estates, hotels and houses in the North, no matter how attractive the returns on investment are. There will always be better place to invest, if not at home. The barbarism of the hausa man will never stop in hundreds of years to come. If an Igbo man, following the necessary risk assessment, decides to stay in the North, to do business, the Igbo man should also be wise enough to repatriate all his earning back home, so that his losses will be highly minimized in the event of any uprising. There is no guarantee that the abandoned property saga will never happen again!



    2. Divestment from the North

    Don’t go where you are not welcome. According to Luke 9.11-15

    "Whatever town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until you leave. 12As you enter the home, give it your greeting. 13If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town."

    This was a clear instruction to his disciples by Jesus Christ. Right from the days of pogram in the north in the 1960s and the subsequent massacre of the Igbo’s up till now in the North, I do not know of other evidence that the Igbos need to prove that they have been rejected by the Northerners. With globalization and information technology, people are now beginning to increase their business frontiers in safe regions, even outside of their own countries. Instead of the Northern Nigeria as a choice place of business for the Igbos, why not Uganda, Ghana, Gabon, Cote D Ivoire etc. I mean, for those of them that cannot come down to the south east, south south or south west to invest and do business. Remember, your fathers enemy can never be your friend and until will arrive at that promised land of ‘Equitable and Fair Nigeria’ Igbos should exercise the utmost caution and smartness in their operations in Nigeria. There are places that the Jews can never settled down for business, not matter how attractive the return on investment seems. Let me make it clear that the federal government can never stop the killing of the Igbos! Let’s educate our people on the reality.

    3. Reinvigoration of the South Eastern Nigeria’s Economy

    Igbos are very resilient, innovative and enterprising people. There is no doubt about it. These traits can be properly harnessed and channeled for optimum returns with the assistance of the south eastern government. We can build a very strong economic bloc across the Niger to ensure that our good brains do not wonder in the North for a living that they can comfortably and safely make in the east. There are common infrastructural projects that the south eastern governors can synergize to achieve. I have always believed that it has become over due for the south eastern governors to come together, to upgrade Nnewi, Onitsha and Aba into international business and technology centers by providing world class infrastructure that will stimulate businesses across the Niger. I have always believed that it will be necessary for the south eastern governors to come together and upgrade the Port Harcourt – Enugu Express way into and international highway with provision for rail lines to ease movement of goods and services in the South East. What are our comparative advantages? Can we optimize them? Yes, for instance we can improve the species of palm trees, to become the world’s greatest producer of palm oil and the associated cosmetics bye products that can be exported to the rest of the world. All these efforts can be complimented by building a world class business school at Aba, that can help to practically train the Igbo man on growing a sustainable business.

    4. Investment Paradigm Shift

    Today Igbos businesses revolve around buying and selling of goods. It is not bad, but however these kind of businesses comes with attendant stress, low margins and their survival are at the mercy of fluctuating and unstable government policies. I am not saying that Igbos should stop buying and selling, but I believe that a lot more could be achieved if the intellectual property component of these businesses are greatly increased through the necessary education. Intangible services bring more money and give less stress than moving goods from one part of the world to the other, but requires the necessary education. That is why, at every opportunity, I will always tell my fellow Igbo man that education is not necessarily for employment, but a compulsory requirement for doing business in the information age. For instance, it is appalling that a lot of Igbo men jump plane to China on periodic basis to bring in less than one million naira goods. These are businesses that can be consummated online and through wire transfers, without visiting china. All the thriving consultancy businesses in Nigeria today are not owned by Igbos.



    5. Success and Management Training /Awareness

    For the same or even less level of success, an Igbo man is more arrogant and loud compared to the Yoruba man or Hausa man. This is what attracts unnecessary envy and hatred. The illicit drug business has been there before the Igbos became aware of it, but today, Igbos are known as drug pushers, whereas that people that made money from it have remained silent. The same thing applies to 419. Today, the Igbos are known as fraudsters despite committing less than of these crimes. I am not in support of the Igbos being involved in all these. Recently and Igbo chap that made money from the downstream sector and celebrated his 40th birthday in a very loud man that attracted serious concern across the country. Today, the inquest into the oil subsidy scandal could have been elicited by that single out. We need to educate the Igbos on the need to keep their head low, no matter their level of success. The people that have money in this country today are not the Igbos and they do not make noise. All these noise making and unnecessary display of affluence make Igbo man the first candidate for killing, whenever there is disturbance.

  • Although I agree with the views expressed by most commentators that Jonathan is not responsible for the social economic disparity between the north and southern Nigeria, according to UNDP reports the level of unemployment in the north is 70 percent while in the south is between 30 to 35; if we want to live in a peaceful society, the wild disparity must be address . There is no society anywhere in the world with such disparity where people are living in peace. I am not ignorant of the social economic problems we have in the south, my view is clear which is that Nigeria political class must address the issue of unemployment before it consume the nation. A free state can only survive when it's citizens feel loyal to the state, and people can only feel loyal to a country when they are getting some form of benefit. No meanifull development can take place in a society where social divisions has remain uncheck.
