Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Rivers State Council have suspended their planned strike, following an agreement reached with the state government weekend.
The labour unions had issued a seven -day ultimatum in the state in respect of illegal deductions from salaries of public servants for the months of September and October, 2012.
Other issues of dispute include the demand for payment of arrears of 70 per cent salary relativity and minimum wage, refusal to stop the Federal Mortgage Bank deductions and request for the removal of state Commissioner of Finance, Dr. Chamberlain Peterside.
However, the meeting resolved that all deductions, namely social services contributory levy, contributory pension and the new personal income tax regime be stopped until agreement is reached between government and labour unions on the issues.
It was further agreed that a technical committee comprising of representatives of government and the labour unions, be constituted to critically study the issues involved and make recommendations as appropriate.
On the refusal of government to pay arrears of 7O per cent salary relativity, it was agreed in the communiqué issued that payment of arrears be paid in three installments, with effect from November, 2012.
On payment of arrears of minimum wage, it was further resolved that the Labour Unions should produce agreement reached between it and government on the matter for implementation.
On the Federal Mortgage Bank deduction it was agreed that the representatives of the Bank be invited to a meeting with the union leaders and representatives of the Government on the matter.
It was further resolved that the monies deducted there from should be kept in suspense account by the Accountant-General, Rivers State pending the resolution of all issues in connection with the matter.
On the demand for the removal of the commissioner for finance, it was resolved that the matter be handled between union leaders and the state governor.
