Rhythm of the Night singer El DeBarge was arrested for drug possession in LA last night.

The 50-year-old singer was stopped by police at 2pm in Encino, California yesterday and cops believe he may have been trying to sell drugs, TMZ reports.

The singer, real name Eldra Patrick DeBarge was arrested for possession of narcotics with intent to sell.

The incident is said to have happened near the 101 Freeway.

The singer is said to have been taken to a nearby jail where he was booked and released on $30,000 bail, the website reports.

He is due in court next month.

This is not the first time DeBarge has been in trouble with the law in 2001 he was arrested for cocaine possession and was given probation.

He was arrested again in 2006 and in 2007 for possession of a controlled substance and cocaine possession respectively.

In 2007 he was arrested for posses of crack and drug paraphernalia and because he broke the terms of his probation he was sentenced to two years in prison.

The singer has a history of drug abuse and last year he cancelled a tour after he checked into rehab just days before it was due to start.

A spokesperson for the singer was unavailable for comment.

The singer's brother James, who was once married to Janet Jackson, is currently in jail after being arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and drug possession.
