Railway transport workers have appealed to the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to implement their welfare package. The workers, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NUR) and the Senior Staff Association of Communication, Transport and Corporation (SSACTAC) spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
NUR’s President, Mr. Rahael Okoro, said an improved welfare package would motivate the workers and ensure the delivery of an effective rail service to Nigerians. “We congratulate the management of NRC for launching the Lagos to Kano train in 2012 to further improve and increase train services in the country.
“But without dedicated workers there will not be an effective service. The management must take the issue of staff welfare seriously. Noting can be achieved except by well motivated work force,’’ Okoro said.
The union leader said that the launch of the new route was a proof that unity of purpose, hard work and determination always lead to rewarding success. He said it was pertinent to restore public confidence in efficient and reliable rail transportation in Nigeria which was the key to federal government’s transformation agenda.
“The delay to boost the clinic to enable workers get a good health care treatment is worrisome. The fund belongs to the workers. It is their contribution from the health insurance scheme. The management should stop delaying the project,” he pleaded.
