The National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Chief Sam Nkire, Wednesday urged Nigerians to reject any budget proposal from either the Federal Government or states for 2013 whose projected recurrent expenditure is more than that of capital expenditure.
Nkire said in a statement in Lagos, that the poor state of public utilities in the country had made it imperative for Nigerians to begin to ask questions about how the tax payer’s money as well the nation’s resources are spent or managed.
The PPA boss said for quite some time, government at the federal, state and local government levels had failed in its basic duty of providing the basic needs of the people due to excessive emphasis on the comfort of government officials which is funded by uncontrolled recurrent expenditure.
Nkire regretted that the few public servants in Nigeria made adequate provision for their welfare and comfort by budgeting nearly 75 per cent for their food, travel, shelter, healthcare, and security while over 150 million Nigerians are left to fend for themselves.
He said there was no reason why cost of running government should be higher than cost of providing infrastructure and taking care of the welfare of the people.
The PPA national chairman advised the federal and state governments to ensure that this trend is reversed in order to tackle the problems of poor road network, unemployment, disease and insecurity in Nigeria.
